Help me decide on my tiny pony line!
  • Hey all, I've been kicking around the idea of starting a tiny riding pony line. Why you ask? Just for fun really and because I breed for tall slender riding horses so thought it would be fun to go the other way and breed for tiny slender riding ponies as well. The thing is, I'm really not sure what to do with the line and I'd like to have some goals (aside from being tiny) to help cut down on keeper foals each year.

I would love it if the community could help me out and give me some suggestions. I usually like my lines to be able to interbreed but, since these guys will be tiny tots the idea would be to keep them separate. However, in the event that I decide to start mixing the lines, let's keep these things in mind.

Almost all my current horses are hom sooty +/- DP, I embrace the darkness.
    I really like appaloosa.
I also like shiny things, like pearl and satin.

I'm not going to say what I'm leaning towards because I don't want to bias anyone, I'll simply say that I like flashy ponies more than solid ones. ;)
So...hit me! What genes I should play with? What should the base pony stud be? Should they have a theme with a specific tack pack? With the winter holidays coming up I think I'd like to get a rank special stud now so I can add fun genes to him once the winter festivities start. No genes are off-limits, this includes ones that are for real money! If you think this pony should be blinged out with ice genes, axiom/nexus, whatever....say it. I may or may not end up adding it depending on my funds available but don't let it stop you from suggesting it. :3

  • On the other server, I have a splash tobiano pony account. I tried to keep my ponies to a dark base like blacks and bays because the white against dark in my opinion looks much sharper. I like the look of the splashy and Tobi markings especially on a black base. But I'm thinking that a liver and white would also be awesome.
  • I am addicted to kitm, w3 and w8, but kitm especially. It's really nice on a dark base and each expression is different. That being said wrong warp is a big passion of mine. I've had one foal born with both and though he was gelded, he is my favorite foal ever created! While the water color and warp work against the dark base, they do make for some flashy foals. This is the guy I mentioned.

  • If you like appaloosa, use that! It doesnt need a lot of other white bling. Add sarin or pearl if you like, but satin is wasted if you have a lot of white.
To make it challenging, breed for low varnish. This means you have to wait till the horses are old enough to tell befire breeding them.
  • Kitm and sabino...
  • Kit m, w8, appy, satin, sooty plus, and watercolor. Dragon ponies with spots.
  • @GreenRules - I do like splash, especially when it gives them the blue eyes, and I agree, the white pops beautifully against those darker bases.

@ApollosLegacy - I've always loved kit m and really don't use it enough, getting it on the tiny tots is a great idea.

@WhiteMountain - I love appaloosa but I currently breed almost exclusively for it with my main lines so I was thinking about branching out with the tiny tots. I should add that with my main lines I'm also focusing on large spotted non-varnish.

@Looper - Thanks for the examples! That first girl is beautiful, I'm so much more in love with frame now that it has been redone.

@best friend - Another kit m lover, okay okay, he'll get kit m!

@ChevalStables - Dragon ponies with spots. XD Love it! Hehehe

Kit m seems to be a favorite and, I won't lie, I love it too. I think it wins as a gene to add. Cheval knows me too well, I love all the genes she suggested. lol But watercolor might be really fun to have... Especially if I only do one copy and then can have a mixed bag of watercolor and normal.

  • @Ren if you make him Sable you get your beautiful browns, bays, champagne, sables, and so many goodies along with the occasional watercolor if you so choose to add that to your dragon army ;) I know how much you love your champagne as well. :)
  • A dp brown base goes with absolutely everything. Champagne, dun, nd1, silver, roan... those warm woody undertones are amazing. If we get a Rhythm of Four, that would be a great base!

But if you wanted variety, you could make your stud Ee so you could have livers as well. Liver also looks nice with pretty much everything.

  • @ChevalStables and @HTRanch

I was considering making him Ee so that I could have all the variety and Rhythm of Four is one of my favorite herd helpers. I was thinking the same thing you were, that if it comes out that would be a great base to use. I'll need to stock up on those RoF's again this year for sure...

  • I also breed little riding ponies! I haven't exclusively focused on size so I don't have a whole lot under 13hh, but I'll share some of my faves for ideas. And you're welcome to straws from any of my guys! You should join the Riding Horses and Ponies chat and the Itty Bitty 13.0 and Under chat! Need moar people breeding little fairy ponies!

I'm planning on waiting for the Freaky Friday HH on December 13th and creating a stud to GMT down as tiny as possible (13.2 for foundies) and play with that. Might be a good starting point for you as well!

Here's some of my favourite lookers from my own herd:

  • @Strawroan - will def join the itty bitty chat, I think I'm in the riding horse/pony chat already. ;) And I'll keep you in mind for straws once I get things going! Love all the sooty plus you have going on there. *drools a little* and Gondor is stunning, looks a lot like some of the riding horses I breed for. heheh

  • I have been working on a little bitties project as well, I want to create a line of 13 hh or under black and white riding ponies. This year I got my hands on a *Star stud for my bootstrapping, if you want straws! I also have 3 other studs open for breeding.
