AFPT cut offs
-
I'm in the middle of doing a broodmare cull, and I'm just wondering how strict are you on with your AFPT cut off, if say you have a cut off of 11, would you spay a mare that is 10.95 or 10.8 etc.21170

I'm pretty anal about cut offs, so I wouldn't let anyone through unless they had absolutely every gene, color, height, bone, marking, everything I was looking for. Then I might let the 10.95 slide. The 10.8 is too much of a significant difference for me.
However, I have switched to comp testing the mares more, and have found it to make a difference. I'm still going through all my lines, but so far it's really cleaning them up. -
All my mares have already be comparison tested, I only keep mare that are superior.21170

Same but I had never thought to do the same that I did with my studs until a friend brought it up. I also started comparing them to a baseline mare. It helped. I wasn't trying to step on toes. Sorry if it seemed that way.

No no you are absolutely fine, thank you for your advice. I've actually just found a pocket of mares I've missed with comparison testing. So hopefully that'll bring the numbers down more. I've culled quite a few mares today, so hopefully I can keep them at a number I'm happy with.21170

I understand on trying to keep the numbers down. I still have so many to go through! I'm going through all my older foundation mares now and replacing them. Then the second and third gen mares get the full treatment.
I'm only breeding a couple of lines this season so I can save for a GMT project and try and get everything reorganized yet again. I feel like I can never quite catch up. :-))
