Gulastra Plume Info?
-
Does anyone know the actual (or theorized) mechanism of gulastra plume? Is it a dilution, or like a white pattern, or something else? What is it about dominant extension (black base coat) and agouti (bay) that activates GP?ID 43830

Last time I looked it up, the dominant theory was it's a version of sabino. I personally don't think that's right because sabino wouldn't be dependent upon Extension and Agouti for expression. But as far as I know, there haven't been any studies on it.#28036

I have seen pictures of horses with what appears to be GP who look more black than bay or brown. Look up Isis Akeem (Egyptian Arabian), Reflection Stone (Arab), and Brace for Bernal (AQHA). I think Bernal has even sired offspring with the same trait.
I know GP was supposed to originate with an Arab stud, but I found a picture of a black Shetland with a white tail. No name or pedigree listed though so no way to tell what it is.ID 43830

The name comes from an Arabian stud who'd offspring commonly had it, but it shows up in many breeds.
Bernal is dark brown, he has bay and brown offspring from non agouti mares. He is kept stalled I'm sure, so I'd bet big money if he was left in the sun, he'd fade to a more recognizable brown. Reflection Stone looks interesting though, because he's supposed to be DNA tested E- aa.#28036Thanked by 1HTRanch -
No way do I think it is sabino. That makes no logical sense as sabino is not coat color-dependent. It seems most reasonable that it is simply an aggressive representation of bay. The agouti gene can turn black mane and tail hairs to white. See the common white hairs on buckskins for example. Probably a secondary gene causing bay to appear that way.
Very possible for there to be GP mimics though that are confusing the picture, be it foal blond or white spotting genes showing up in those cases.Need to contact me? Read this first. Reflection Stone's photos were taken as a very young horse. His white is growing out.
