How do you cull show ponies?
  • So i need to go on a cull spree. How you determine if a show horse is earning its keep? Do you have a cut off for amount of points per age? (IE: 10 year olds must have 400+ points; all that have <399 get culled). Do you have other methods? What is the best way to determine who i should ship out to auction? Any help appreciated!

  • I'm still figuring out a rhythm of my own, but my general starting point is 10+years old must have a payout of over create price. I've also been starting to cull them if their daily contribution is lower than my current average.

  • Blue Valley, how are you calculating your average? Are you using total # of horses, spelds only, no foals ... ?

Just a heads up (not criticizing please don't think so) this belongs in Help Me Out, and Ammit may or may not move it. You might bookmark it, perhaps it won't get lost if she does?

  • One method I use is to go through search. Each year 10 and above just show ponies, I search Earning this Year. This works best closer to the end of the month. The last page is the only one I go threw, but unless a horse has a great daily income I don't need adult horses that paper last, and are actually loosing points.

  • I go through my gelded 10yo and up, and search by points this year. I’ll do it around the middle of the month, that way it’s normally been 4 shows per horse. If they have leveled off and are coming in last with very few points, off they go. Also if their CLP is lower than 2500, off they go.
  • @towdolly Omg i totally thought i clicked on "Help Me Out" *facepalm" Thansk for pointing that out lol

  • @towdolly I'm only calculating my established show herd and older stallions, adding foals and pasture mares just messes with the average I'm looking for.

  • @BlueValley are you using a spreadsheet for that, or manually adding and dividing

  • @Summervine I would love to have a spreadsheet, but for now I just manually calculate and keep track.

  • I'm only culling horses that have leveled off or are close to leveling off but not showing a gain in show score.
I just sent about 300 horses to auction between yesterday's and Tuesday's and they were either leveled off/almost leveled and placing below the middle of the class or almost leveled or later in life spelds that are not placing well or 18/19 yr old pasture mares that I no longer need.
I did also throw in a few low PT splM and Watercolor speld foals because I just don't have the space to keep all the pretty babies.
  • If you're a premium upgrade account, the herd download is quite helpful for this.
