Horse preference question
-
In the theme of my most recent posts about being excited for SS, I remembered a question I had way back last year that I never got around to asking.
Why do so many people love drafts?
Don't get me wrong, drafts are very beautiful. I have several myself. But it seems like 70% of the horses that are being promoted are drafts. As a lover of Riding horses, I am just wondering what draws people to the drafts.Thanked by 1MamaMiaStables -
I remember looking this up before and riding horses were actually the least popular (out of the three) Let's look at the statistics:
285,726 Drafts
514,348 Warmbloods
169,515 Riding Horses
So I think the numbers have risen a lot since all the warmbloods from before the addition of bone weights have died out and the higher generations may have bred to other ends of the spectrum. But yeah, drafts are the more popular of the two. I'm a Riding Horse breeder exclusively, so I don't know what the hype is either...but I can think maybe drafts breeders can see more of the hide art on their horses, or they have personal connections and preferences, or they thought the RH body type looks too spindly or emaciated. I remember a comment from the first time they were released from someone who thought they looked unhealthy.
Does anyone want to add to my mad-woman's ramblings? -
As someone who started by breeding drafts I can say it was because a) they're gorgeous b) I don't own any IRL even though I really want some and c) I'm just personally more drawn to them. I love the new art and the tackpacks being released for WBs and RHs though, so I've been expanding in those bone weights.ID# 25784

It's funny, coming from HJ1 I feel like the majority of what I see are WBs and RHs. When I joined HJ2 I decided to start breeding drafts and cobs mostly just because I hadn't been breeding them on HJ1. Then, I noticed how many more drafts seem to be promoted on HJ2 and that motivated me to keep going! Its fun to have accounts on each server to adapt to those different niches so to speak. Tbh I love all of the body styles!

I am a draft/cob breeder all the way! All the art is gorgeous, it's personal preference for me. I just love the chonky little floofers!ID 43830

I started with drafts cause I always preferred them in nature. I've noticed I'm more likely to keep a cob than a warmblood on my even lines, but most of my uneven keepers have been warmbloods the last couple seasons.45120Thanked by 1GeneverGinger

For me, I like large-boned animals in general...I have cane corso for my dogs, and have always preferred the strong look of drafts. The beautiful arched thick neck, large hindquarters, and large stature always make me so happy :)Thanked by 1GeneverGinger

I've always loved the big and chunky ones, in most, if not all, species. There is soemthing with the hindquarters of the RP/RH art in the game that I just do not like. 100% a personal preference though, I could never draw a straight line, so all the art is the work of gods for me.ID 108

I personally love the riding horse art because it reminds me (a little) of the first unicorn, which was my favorite movie growing up. I breed riding horses only on here for now. I just love them.
In real life, my "second family" bred Belgians. I loved going to the farm and hanging out in the field with the mares and babies when I was really little before they had to sell the farm.
I'm also from Northwest Iowa, and one of the Cream Draft farms wasn't too far from my Grandmother's farm, so we would visit them around Christmas for sleigh rides and coco. I love Draft horses, but I just prefer to bred riding horses on here. -
I like and breed for both. My liver line is riding horses and my patterned dun line is cobs.Breeding high quality Sheldasen horses. Liver chestnut, DP mushroom, and rose gray riding horses. Dun cobs with all the patterns. Watercolor, Wrong Warp and ice on mixed body types.

I have some of all the types but generally breed warmbloods just because I still end up with foals of the other weights from them. I do love the tack for the RHs best though!
-
I bred Warmbloods. But then I realized how much I liked Drafts in the Long&Luscious manes. So basically I switched my entire stable over a tack pack.
-
@BellaVoce, come to think of it, my real life animals are of the chunky type too. I have an English Labrador with a big block head, two quarter horses with big booties, and a Boer goat breeding operation. I guess I'm just a softie for the big guys anyways, lol.ID 43830

The Riding Horses don't do it for me... Having Arabians (and adoring them) my entire life, one would think that I would be drawn to the "typey" Riding Horse artwork, but I am not.
I also, unlike a lot of people, very strongly dislike the drafts and cobs... In fact, if I get a nice foal and it rolled heavy genes from its pedigree, I will pay a GMT to make it a Warmblood :))
I love the Warmbloods!!✿ Kismet | #38280 | Bootstrapping Excellence ✿ -
I personally prefer heavy bone. I’m from wales and my family have a riding centre where we mostly run welsh cobs so I’ve grown up around them. I like how you see more of the markings on the heavy ones, particularly after you move the mane out of the way :-))
I’m not such a fan of the warm bloods. To me they just don’t look quite as appealing or perhaps they look a little closer to the designs used on Howrse, which is a shudderingly ugly game now compared to here.
I am getting a little closer to liking the riding pony style. They look like little Arabs, I find them kind of cute but overall I like the heavys all the wayID - 47350 (Most Licences) Breeding heavy. Carry it Forward Project - Snf, Kp, Dp, Df, Sa and Sb2. Welsh Dreams - Full of fantasies

I'm an English Dressage rider, but I grew up with chunky quarter horses and petite Arab crosses. My mare in real life is a heavy-boned thoroughbred, so I really prefer the warmblood type on here. I am breeding a line of light-boned minis though, so I splurged and got the arabian nights tack pack for them.
-
I prefer the draft artwork. The warmbloods look high in the rear to me... It bothers my eye developed for show dogs.
The riding horses look too frail and i dont care for the dished in faces.
That said, it would be great to have some more horse body models!Thanked by 1Summervine -
I love Warmbloods and Drafts are growing on me. :) A Riding Horse from earlier in my game has had to push the height and bone limits to near Warmblood and even they'll be phased out of my stock in a couple of seasons.
-
For me, one important thing is that the drafts provide the largest possible canvas for coat colors and markings. Also, I just prefer the conformation of the in-game drafts and warmbloods over the riding horses. Personal preference.--------------------------------

Warmbloods have always been the most popular, I don't think that's changed. No-one for ages on this server bred cobs but glad to see a few do now. The ponies have never been that popular either. So stands to reason the drafts are the most popular after the Warmbloods, most people seem to like bigger
-
I always wanted a heavier-weight horse. When I used to do horse vaulting we had some gorgeous heavy horses with beautiful broad backs, and they were always our favorites. Plus, I'm a sucker for those big floofy feet!
I prefer the draft art to the warmblood art, just as a personal preference. I like the riding horses too, but breeding drafts and riding horses means you're gonna end up with warmbloods, so I decided to focus on draft. I made a separate account to breed riding horses, but that's not where I spend money on genes and such, so I don't have as many horses there as I do on this account.Thanked by 1Summervine -
I like the drafts and riding horses equally (not a fan of the warmblooods). I just subjectively think that the drafts look the best especially with the DPBreeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
