So I have bred this boy 7 times, and ALL of said foals have been spayed or gelded. Should I geld him or find better mares?

  • I would give him more chances than 7... sometimes it takes a good few foals before you see true potential. Sometimes it happens immediately. I'd breed him several months to several mares (much more than 7), and then decide.
Although, if you'd wish to sell him, I'd be pleased to buy him. :)

  • I've noticed that pass rates get lower and lower the later the generation. Even with a good stud, you'll have much fewer passing foals at fourth generation than you would at second.

You could definitely be looking at mare lag, though. I peeked at a couple of the foals' pedigrees -- not enough to say for sure, but I noticed that your stud is probably a higher A than the mares are Blues, simply because a lot of the Blue mares came out of red mares or B studs, while your stud is an A out of an A/Blue pairing. You could try to find some Blue out of Blue mares, and see if that makes any difference?
  • I agree with you about the pass rates in higher generations, Ginger! It makes the ones that DO pass super special!

  • I wouldn't geld him just because of gelds/spays, his quality might be good, and the mares not so good. But either way as the generations get higher there is a big range in the A/blues, as well as in the Star/golds, which can make it harder to get intact foals
  • Sometimes high speld rate can mean a good thing for your stallion. As BA/SBA just means quality compared to parents. So if he is your best possible for that generation then that means the foals have to be all the better to pass! Also in HJ2, 7 foals is not a lot. Im my foundation pastures out of 100 foals I normally keep like 7. Or even less occasionally

  • I think Baya meant they bred him over seven seasons, not to seven mares -- if you click through and look at offspring, there's a lot more there than seven!
  • @GeneverGinger, no. They bred him to seven mares. His page says he's got 7 foals this month, and they just got him this month. So, I'm assuming they've only bred him to 7 mares.

  • Whoa, I wonder what I clicked? I must have looked at the wrong horse somehow, sorry!
  • @GeneverGinger, he does have 26 foals, so it could've been there. But Baya only bred him to 7 mares. I put Bayas ID into his foal search under "breeder ID" and only 7 foals come up.

  • Out of his 26 foals none are intact though. Im going through the same with a good portion of my breeding heard. After the auction and i have more space in my primary barn all the mares are going in the stalls and im culling out the bad eggs weeding out my studs and figuring this out thing out because I want a good quality breeding heard as well as quality show horses which Ive gained a few from snips. But it is indeed frustraiting trying to figure out who to breed to who and how to get the best possible outcome with few snip snips.
  • With stallion comparison testing being around longer it’s been much easier for stallions to be so much better than the mares.

With the introduction of mare comparison testing recently it will take a bit to even out the generations especially in the larger barns like mine but hopefully in the future here won’t be such a gap and more intact foals
