Overthinking PT vs Paper
-
Okay, I think I'm overthinking this. Two otherwise identical colts. One is B papered; one is A papered. Despite having the lower PT score, the A papered stallion will produce the better offspring, yes? Will his lower PT score impact his future offsprings' PT scores?

The A papered boy is at least AGA as dad who is A papered whereas the B papered boy is a step down in paper from dads A, generally you don't want to see the papers back slide when breeding. Papers are important for breeding PT is important for showing!
PT lets you know roughly when they level off in training, the higher the PT the longer they train so the better they will eventually show.
Personally I'd keep the A boy for now and speld the B boy to throw in your show herd. You could possibly get an A with higher PT next season from either of those pairings, especially if the mares have a full 30 day pasture bonus.Dabbler in EVERYTHING. -
There is just about no correlation between PT and breeding ability. In fact, I'm sure we all had that failed paper foal with 13PT.... Well the reverse happens too. They are completely separate rolls. Even if they are rolls "from the same dice" so to speak. Occasionally people search for a "13PT bootstrap sire", the theory being if they have good enough dice to get a 13PT they should be good enough to get a high star. But I personally would not look for a BS sire that way. Because the parents could throw WAY at the top of their range for the PT, and then WAY down on the breeding ability and the colt could test worse than sire! This is why I normally don't ever even PT test by breeding stock. I want good breeders, but don't need them to be good show ponies. Finally, in some cases where people have two colts, sometimes they geld the higher PT colt with the intention being he can be an even higher quality show horse. And even then I don't think PT has as much affect on lifetime points as you would think it would, so I normally use it to gage quality of the parents even if it doesn't affect me keeping the foal itself.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

PT has no correlation to breeding ability. AFPT is a relatively accurate gauge of breeding ability when used in comparison between similar horses with similar breeding histories. If you are trying to pick a stallion and your goal is high PT offspring, I would recommend you consider Consistency along with paper, but for general breeding stock, paper is the more important metric.

There is specificity a correlation in lined horses. In foundations it is random.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.
