Het or Hom DP?

    Studious Pearls

His sire is proven het DP, but could this guy be hom? Or is that the S+ playing tricks on me?

then there's his babies (there's only three)

I think she's het, but again it could be that S+Ssty combo :-/

    Stone Sass

I honestly don't think he has DP, but who knows :)

Lastly, I think I hit the jackpot with her. Hom S+, Hom Pearl, possibly Hom DP? I'm still to this whole DP thing :))
  • First off, the last one is easy to deal with. His dam is a hom S+ chestnut, which means she doesn't carry dp, so he is only het :)

Art Studio looks like this het dp S+ foundation, so I'd say het dp

Now, for Stone Sass, It took some time, because there is a very special thing where dp can interact differently with the different agouti genes. He is het At, which is different from hom At, buckskin. I managed to find this S+ het Ata buckskin who I am sure is hom dp. While the S+ isn't as extreme on Sassy pants ((Edit: ok, I just noticed they don't have S+...but they're for sure dp), I'd say that they're possibly hom dp.

As for Pearls...I got no clue whether he is hom or het xD Hell, looking at his sire I'd say that his sire isn't dp at all! The easiest way to find out if a horse is dp or not is to compare it to similar genetics with known darkening genes. Here is the closest I could find. He's got basically the same base, and he's 100% only het dp. I THINK they're the same shade, but not 100% sure

On the look out for pointed creates
  • I do think Stone Sass is at least het dp! Normal duns don't have extensive dapples like that. However, Sass could have inherited it from their dam, who could also be carrying a copy of DP.

  • @ObsidianKitsune thank you! His sire is het DP as I've gotten hom DP babies out of him :)

@HTRanch interesting! I don't breed duns, and I've never seen a buckskin dun before, so I had no clue :))
  • With Stone Sass having cream and dun, even as a brown dun he'd be much lighter with no DP.

I do breed a lot of dark duns, crossing them with DP on purpose to get those lovely dapples. Stone Sass has got DP possible on both sides and he's so dappled and dark that I would definitely think he got both. :)

And all that said, if Stone Sass is for sale, I'd love to buy. :D
