Why is this mare darker?

I think it just has to do with how much the dun happens to be expressed. I create a lot of true silver dark bay duns when I get a chance, and they always come out all different shades like this. The only other difference I see in their genes is pangare, but it really isn't making that much difference here. It wouldn't effect the whole coat like that anyway.

In addition to the above, I imagine the second horse has DP or dense pheomelanin. DP, like sooty, is a darkening gene and will make the horse’s coat a darker shade.. Unlike sooty, though, DP is a hidden gene and won’t show up with gene testing.

I agree that second girl looks DP. I've had a few of those dark duns I went to add DP to and found out they were already DP. :))~*~ Justa ~*~
