What's Going On With These Morgans?
-
Hey all! So, I figured I'd bring up something that you guys might have heard of. I specialize in Morgans in real life, and I've been wondering about this for a while. Here's a basic rundown.
A bay mare and a black stallion, both from well-known (and commonly bred) lines, were bred together. They produced a foal that phenotypically looked champagne, a color not found in Morgan horses, and she has pale green eyes. Her name is TL Champagne Sensation.
The owners send away the DNA test to figure out where this champagne came from, and it turns out that she is negative for champagne. And cream, pearl and silver. Which basically means that, not only is this a new color in the Morgan breed, this is a completely unrecorded color in horses!
The breeders try a very similar cross, and end up with a foal that looks pretty similar to TL Champagne Sensation, but a bit darker. He has the same color of eyes. The owners do the test again, and again, negative for champagne, cream, pearl, and silver. His name is Snowdancer's Champgndream.
The owners decide to cross these two horses. The resulting colt looks a lot like his sire.
This whole thing is super fascinating to me, and I would love to hear your opinions on it. Here's a really good comprehensive guide to the story, and it links to a complete photographic pedigree: http://www.morgancolors.com/oddities.htmID - 22087
Currently playing around with the ex-hidden genes, plus I'm an Achievements of Like-Minded People fanatic.

I have heard there are others that are registered as palomino and buckskin that look similar but hadn't been color tested. There's also an unknown allele suspected to be on the same loci as cream & pearl in another breed (which escapes my memory at the moment). I wonder if it could the same or similar.
I also wonder if these horses have been tested for tiger eye. They don't look too terribly wrong for being just an interesting shade of a normal color and having the odd eye color.#28036 -
Neat!
It won't be a tiger eye as that does not change the coat. It's another mutation. Probably one unique to these lines.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.

I was saying that they aren't that different from a normal color that maybe it's just the eyes. The chestnut one could easily be just a chestnut with pale eyes, the bay stud could easily be an interesting shade of bay with pale eyes.#28036

If they hadn’t said the skin color was different I’d be with you Haltanny, but if they are born with pink skin and that skin darkens but not to a normal skin tone, that definitely indicates something more extensive than just Tiger Eye. Will be very cool to see what they find out and also to see any further offspring those two produce.

They look very noticeably diluted to me, but I also stare at a lot of dilute horses to get the generator to run properly.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.
