Genetics: Snowflake
  • https://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=4625144

    This filly is homsnowflake appy
    Father is hom snowflake appy
    Mother is liver chestnut

The mother thus would be a carrier...but how is she a carrier when theres not a trace of appy in her bloodline?
  • Snowflake can hide for many many generations, since its recessive and needs Lp to show. Just because a horse doesn't have Lp doesn't mean its not snowflake, if that makes sense. A solid horse can still carry the snowflake gene and pass it on, but won't express it themselves :)

EDIT; I just had a quick look through the mare's pedigree. She has Mr. Meteoric Milestone on her materal line (1185399 and MR3 Metioric Valentine are both granddaughters of Mr. Meteoric Milestone) who was a snowflake carrier. So I'd say the snowflake has come from him through his son, MR2 Metioric Rose :)
  • Snowflake is a separate gene from appaloosa, so you can have one without the other. Snowflake just needs the appy gene to show.
  • There is actually quite a bit of snowflake (and Appaloosa) in her lines, I count 14 foundations alone that are Hom snowflake. It looks like the Appaloosa gene got missed somewhere around the 3rd or 4th generation out on her dams side, so they have been silent carriers. But as mentioned, since it is a recessive gene that also requires the Appaloosa gene to be expressed, it can hide for awhile.
