I've been working on my AoLMP stallion and I think he's just about ready to hit the pasture! I was staring at him though and thought that little GP on the tip of his tail might make him a little cuter but I can't find very much information on it anywhere!

I read the genetics guide so I understand it only shows on bays, which luckily he is! However I cannot for the life of me find any information as to whether it needs to be homozygous to show or if heterozygous works too. The only pictures in the genetics guide were homozygous so I assume it needs two copies but I'd rather ask before spending the money!

It needs to be homozygous, and a plain (no silver, etc) bay/brown. Appy and patterns are fine, though.

This is my Gulastra Plume guy. He is brown, any version of the bay or brown gene(as long as there is a copy of black) will show the GP tail as long as they are homozygous for GP. Splash can cause a white tail sometimes, just as a caution. Also, they will not show the white until they have aged up, foals will not show it. So don’t just discount a foal because it doesn’t show, double check with the breeders club. Silver will hide the tail, as Spry mentioned.

I made my Accomplishments boy GP along with a bunch of other stuff. He’s hom DP Hom Sooty Onyx, but this will give you a slight idea of how yours might look with the tail.

As others have said, I try to avoid splash, silver, W1 and W10 that are likely to obscure the tail Plume. Tobiano can also be an issue as, obviously, can be extensive appy, but I don’t go out of the way to get rid of them like I do splash and silver.
