How does everyone keep their horse's names straight?
  • I've gotten to where I've got a ton of mares on pastures as well as a bunch of show ponies. I love to have everyone have names but I'm finding that I am naming some horses names that are already used. How does everyone keep track? I'm a name freak and everyone has to have their own name but I hate the idea of running out of unique names.

  • In generations I always tried to take a bit of the sires name and put it in the foals. ExampleI Xemor’s foals always had Mor in their name. Other than that I’m random. Using color, moods, flowers, objects, (piano, Skillet, sink) pretty much anything that strikes my fancy. Though I did accidentally use the same name on two very different mares once, so it’s not a foolproof method. Now I just name the important ones.
  • I don't name horses on here very often unless they are special. They get a prefix and they are good to go. In real life, my family breeds goats. When we name them we sometimes pick a theme by year (air force planes, celebrities/performers, flowers, historical figures, scientists, etc).

The other thing we do is base the names off of the dam so we know which kids belong to who. For example, Chili's quadruplets this year were named Malabar, Sriracha, Wasabi, and Habañero. Mars' babies were named Sojourner and Curiosity after the two Mars rovers.

You can also go off of holidays! We had twin doelings born this year on International Women's Day, so they were named Rosie and Riveter. The two bucklings born on the Ides of March were named Julius and Caesar.

  • I gave up on naming lol All my mares are given their ID number along with a prefix and suffix and then i give my studs actual names because i keep significantly less of them. My show horses are just ID numbers with a prefix.

I use this alphabet to note specific genes in the suffix of a horses name:
    Aa - Nacre
    B - Brindle
    Cc - Chinchilla
    Dd - DP
    Ee - Splash 3
    Ff - Frame
    Gg - Gray
    Hh -
Ii - Ice (followed by number)
    Jj -
    Kk - KP
    Ll - Plaid
    Mm - Splash M
    Nn - Snowflake
    Oo - ND1
    Pp - Pearl
    Qq - Satin
    Rr - Watercolor
    Ss - Sooty+
    Tt - Thunderstruck
    Uu - Mushroom
    Vv - Nexus
    Ww - Wrong Warp
    Xx - Axiom
    Yy -
    Zz - Tiger Eye

Numbers 3, 4, 8, and 10 are used to note white spotting genes

    Examples:

A2nd gen mare with het mushroom, white 3, and homp DP would be -
    AHH 2G # u3D
    (u=het mushroom 3=White 3 and D=Hom DP)
Capital letters are hom for the represented gene and lowercase are het

A 4th gen stud with het ice 10, wrong warp, and thunderstruck -
    AHH 4G StainedGlass i10wt

    All Show Ponies -
    AHH #

But i also have 9955 horses currently so not really that easy to name them all. And way too time consuming for me!

  • Gen and if they pass SBA, Part of sire's name + Part of Dame's name unless they strike me as needing something completely different-usually on a theme. Then any genes I'm tracking.

Show horses desig by SH then name.
  • im getting to the same point as AHayes, where i literally cannot name all of my horses. from here on out ill just be using their ID and abbreviations to let me know what genes they have- that is, unless the horse is really special.

  • Yeah I can't name anymore and anyway I want to know what gen they are and whether they have frame or white in them so as I don't put them in the wrong pasture! Only some studs have names although I keep the names other people have given them if they were not bred by me :)
In the past I went for lines of a song and just give each horse a few words of it - that was fun :D

  • Thanks for this post - you've made me look through some of my old show ponies - I did used to name them. This one's name is pretty obvious :X

  • This are all good ideas! I use my personal notes section on my home page to keep track of names I like and I try to remember to add and delete as needed...

  • I used to be meticulous, but it is to much now. Show horses get their number, and I have a prefix/suffix system similar to AHayes. My stallions, and mares 2g and up get a name. Mare names are recycled, that is if a 2g mare is named "Booboo" I will name all the mares descended from her Booboo, just the prefixes and suffices will be different.
    3C2 Booboo AKKOS b
    3-Generation
    C2- Stallion Line
    Booboo - Name
    AKKOS - Appaloosa,KP,KP,Roan,Sabino
    b-blue papered
It seems complicated, but I am used toy own shorthand so writing and reading it easy to me. It is useful when I am looking at my mares in a list, I don't have to open her page to know her generation or genetics. It makes breeding easier. At this point I have overhauled my naming system three or four times to hit on this one.

  • I have a whole folder of websites I use for different lines.

In some lines I am using Tolkien Elvish based names and have an Elvish dictionary bookmarked to find new translations of names there.

My Thunderstruck line is all AC/DC song titles.

My mushroom line is partially using mathematical and scientific things that use the Greek letter mu as a symbol. My mushroom tattoo is a silver Mu.

Other than that I usually try to name my stallions something interesting that I can riff off of. I try to combine sire and dam names in some way in those lines that don’t have other themes, but obviously this can get repetitive, especially if I’ve managed to use stock from my homebred foundation lines for several generations...

For foundation mares I tend to try to use inspiration from things around me like Song and book titles, everyday objects, or if I’m traveling, things we have seen or done on our trip. It’s not unusual to see a bit of a create spree in my foundation lines where you can tell I named a batch of mares together!

  • Other things in my Foal Naming bookmarks folder:

    An Australian Aboriginal language dictionary

A list of sky deities from various religions from Wiki

A Wiki list of various Apple cultivars

The complete list of paintings by Claude Monet

Multiple name generators including one for the Kentucky Derby

    A list of Shakespearean quotes/works/characters

Coming soon: a GoT something probably since I have a foundation stallion in the works named Valar Dohaeris

  • Although I don't actually name mares much, I do name stallions, and I have a lot of them!! I also try to have something in the mares name that clues me into their sire's name. It's so I can grab group of them from a drop down menu and know what stallion I can put them too without opening their page.

So stallions will follow some sort of theme from their sire, sometimes even a combination from sire and dam line. So will the mares when I name them. It helps to have some sort of theme, even if they are just starting with the same couple of letters! Some of my themes can be rather obscure sometimes, just so I don't get repetitive, that even I forget the connection LOL!

Foundations mares are simply named something that clues me into their colour, or what rank special they are. Again so it makes choosing them from the drop down menu easily
  • Lol @Cheers I name a bunch after Greek Gods and Goddesses...my old favorite girl Nyx passed on a couple seasons ago, so now i have a Nyxie Pixie...of course it's a tall draft so pixie not really appropriate lol but oh well!

I don't tend to do a lot of line breeding (I like to mix it up to get surprises - hence my username), so I don't get any more complicated that really.

    NAMES:

Show ponies usually get snippets of song lyrics or phrases from things that I'm reading.

Breeding ponies are a bit more complex - for my favorite studs, I try to have all their breeding offspring names include one specific phrase. For example:
Two Thousand and Two has the word 'Two' in most of his breeding progeny names.

This way I can kinda follow who has sired who (just for fun, since I don't line breed a lot):
Gen 1 W1 Third Times the Charm - "Charm"
Gen 3 Offspring of Third Times the Charm - W3 The Charming Appeal - "Appeal"
Gen 4 Offspring of Third Times the Charm - W4 Combustive Charm - "Hot"
    etc etc

Then once I have the key word from the sire, I try to include the dam's name as well. Example: a horse out of W4 Combustive Charm and W4 Meteoric Magnetism is named 'W5 Flaming Hot Meteor.'

It's not a perfect system, I don't strictly follow it, and it's getting a bit muddled as my lines get to higher and higher gens. But half of the fun I get from this game is playing around with names! :)
  • I've gotten to the point as most people here of not being able to name all my horses. But, back when I did name them all, I gave them a prefix. That way you don't have to worry about using names that are already taken. Now, if I want to give one a name, I have generation prefixes and gene lists in the name that make sure the name is one of a kind even if the word name I pick has been used already. My show ponies all have the prefix CWS.

  • My breeding horses have all kinds of gene suffixes so i can search by them.. Like "mu" fir hrt musroom snd "MU" for hom mushroom. Add genes like DP, kp, snowflake, pearl, silver, white 10... And theres not a lot of room left for names!
