At first I wasn’t going to keep him because he didn’t get the ice from his dad or the liver from his mom, so he wasn’t super fancy gene-wise unless you count the w3, then I tested him on a hunch by seeing if he could be registered in the snowflake breeders club, and by golly he made it! He also papered A. Can’t wait until he ages up!

He did get a copy of DP from his dam, since she's homozygous for it. Breed him to hom sooty girls and he could easily produce liver babies.

Yep! I didn't even look at that! The mom's only got one copy of sooty, which means she's homozygous for DP! "Liver" chestnuts are chestnuts that have three darkening genes - in most cases, two sooty and one DP, but in his mom's case, one sooty and two DP.

Your boy isn't "liver" because he's only got one sooty and one DP, but also because he's a bay! Liver is a term that only gets applied to chestnuts, while three darkening genes in a palomino is called a "chocolate" palomino. In most other horses, though, there's no word for it, they're just a darker color.

Since his genes read off Ee, he has a chance of throwing the e, which is what the chestnut is. Breed him to other chestnuts (ee) that are hom for sooty (SstySsty), and you'll have a chance at liver chestnuts!
