I was really excited to see chinchilla for sale today and put it on one of my mares. However I made her hom and she doesnt look any different after several rerolls and refreshes.

She's black. Chinchilla doesn't show on black without silver, or bay. And turns a chestnut (red based) white. :) She needs silver. Or bay.

I would advise adding an allele of brown (At) to her. :D try searching for homozygous chinchilla and seeing what you like. :)

Fixed! Now she looks like a ghost pony 8-X Haha. I love it! I am partial to the chns with a darker dapples body and silver mane/tail, but now I can play with her and see what crosses I like. And I'm not opposed to breeding het carriers and seeing what foals turn up down the line :) Now that the gene is unlocked maybe I can get a stud or at least breed her to one.

@BlackWyld Thank you for the examples! I didnt have enough GMTs for the brown allele so I added bay. In hindsight should have added the silver for the look I'm more into but oh well. Still learning and experimenting. Plus now I can play around with breeding for the foal I want instead of just making one in the lab :) I'll do more research and hopefully get my hands on a stud with game $ instead of real $. But I was SO happy to see this gene in the sale today, I totally love it!

Chinchilla is my absolute favourite gene so far and I adore it on any version of silver black.
No matter what, your girl turned out gorgeous and I am sure she will give you tons of beautiful babies.

If you don't mind heavier babies I would be happy to send you a couple of straws from my blue roan boy to try:

@BlackWyld I would love some straws from your handsome boy! My other breeding focus is cobs and I may expand to drafts too, so I can definitely take advantage of him :) It would be fun to put him on my cobs and see if I end up with any hom foals down the road. Thank you!!

@FlyingPheasant, I have the chinchilla gene on Bluegrass. I'm sure you've seen some my silver blacks over there and I know you've seen my classic champagne colt. :D

The addiction is very real :)) my hubby gave me some money tonight, but I'm waiting to see what comes up in the sale tomorrow. I've got a mare on Bluegrass I want to add DP to, and I still need to add Wrong Warp and green axiom to my space herd over.

I love Chinchilla! Looks like you have a lovely start to a new line, @FlyingPheasantFarm

It is easily my second favorite gene, very closely following Mushroom!

You can do so many fun things with it! I personally have a few different mixes:

Snowflake is in two of my chinchilla lines, Ice 9 is in one, i have a little bit of KP in one line just for some surprises down the line, Sooty+ in one, and i have splash M in one line. I love mixing and matching :x

Careful you don't end up like some of us where "Whoops, I made her a boyfriend." becomes "Whoops, I made him a few more girlfriends." and progresses to "A couple more boys won't hurt." and then "Now they need more girlfriends." ad infinitum.

Suddenly your barns are full of beautiful chins and you have single handedly paid for Ammit's next big Europe trip. :-))
