GMT project- help a sista out!
  • Hey! I am about to undertake my very 1st GMT project and I need some input and thoughts on which stud to use! Basically I am looking to have a super heavy stud with hom ND1, one copy each of the different tiger eye genes, and be either either liver chestnut or chocolate palomino with possibly an extra copy of DP added so it is hom DP.

I got super lucky and created or snagged these exceptionally perfect studs as a base. 2 are 3yrs and 1 is a 2yr old so plenty of time to GMT and get them all snazzy throughout the month of June!

This guy is a liver chestnut already and carries roan! He is tall but light at 2.92 and would be changed to 3.25 bone weight.

He is a cremello and carries W20 so could be fun to add one more KIT and KP maybe? He is my heaviest bone weight at 3.11 but is kinda short.

This guy is a cutie! He is cremello, ND1, and already has one copy of sooty. Possibly add one more copy of ND1, one sooty and 1-2 DP if they come up in sales and take one cream off.

I guess I just need someone's thoughts on what stud you would use and if it was your pony, what genes would YOU add? I am not inclined toward fantasy colors and I want to go easy on the white as I want my stud to be able to safely cross to a wide variety of mares (both mine and to the public if anyone is interested). I also am pondering the possibility of boosting him. Would you do that for a 1st generation stud? They are all already B papered at least but would it be to my advantage if boosted to an A or would that really limit number of foals passing BA?

  • At expros, I would leave them as is. I'd want to get a lot of intact babies, and boosting them would result in more altered offspring. Remember, the foals have to be as good as or better than BOTH parents!

For the gmting, are you going to be spending hbs or real money? If it's hbs I'd greatly consider going with the het dp one, since dp is one of the more expensive genes to buy. If you don't mind a little bit of pattern but mostly want solid, the last stallion would be best, but then I hate w20 >.< The first boy already has two kit genes, so if you want the option of kp he'd be the best to go for.

First off, let's put a list of all of the genes you want on your stallion:

    dp x 2
    Ccr possibly
    Nd1 x2
    Max bone.
    TE1/TE2 ($10 for that, or 10 gmts)

In total, here is the list of gmt costs for each boy:
    First:
    1x DP - 10
    Max bone weight - 1
    2x nd1 - 10
    Tiger eyes - 10
Total gmts: 31, 32 with Cream added
    Second:
    2x dp - 20
    2x sooty - 2
    2x nd1 - 10
    Tiger eyes - 10
    Total gmts: 42
    Third:
    2x dp - 20
    1x sooty - 1
    1x nd1 - 5
    Tiger eyes - 10
    Total gmts: 36

  • Also, for what I would add, it'd be S+. I love my S+ dp! But that is even more expensive than normal sooty, which some of your boys would need to produce liver/chocolate palomino babies

  • Thank you for your thoughts Obsidian! I am really torn between the liver chestnut boy and the cremello nd1! I am actually toying with the idea of GMTing both of them since I like them both so much and both offer a lot to my breeding programs. I probably will be spending both real and HJ bucks... w20 must come off any boy I have- I dislike the huge boosting effect it has on otherwise gorgeous patterns!

I am pondering adding S+ to one of these boys! It is a really beautiful dappling effect on the horse no doubt...

gah so hard to make a decision! Both boys really are perfect and bring such nice things to the table!

  • Well, at least you've knocked one boy out, lol!

I would personally go with the liver boy, and add a copy of cream or leave him as is. If you use the cremello boy and leave him hom cream, then every single one of your second gens will be chocolate palominos. I like to see some variance in my foals. If you want some chocolate palominos only, then this is where the mares of your herd come forward and shine. Genes that you want some of but not constantly they provide. Like say you want some tobiano in your herd, only only like 1 in every 5 foals? You buy a couple of tobiano mares and let them provide for it. It's part of the reason why you see me buying so many dilute black mares for my fantasy herd. My sire for there doesn't have any cream or champagne, but I love the blue look those give, so I'm getting mares for him to get the desired effect. But I also love the normal foals I get too!

For a white gene to replace the w20, I can suggest either w3 or w8. They're both fairly safe, with w8 being the safest. Or you could go even safer, like with sabino or tobiano, which also have the basis of being safer!

And again your budget comes into the equation too lol. If you can buy some genes with real money that'd be a big help. DP and S+ come along often enough that they should show up in the RGS

I added bone weight, DP, and 1 copy each of the tiger eye.. will add more as I see any RGS that pop up that catch my fancy.. might add 1 copy of ND1 later and switch out one of the sooty to sooty+

I added a copy of tiger eye and ND1.. I think I will use this boy to add Onyx to once it is released if it turns out the way I think it will do! I probably will take off one cream depending on how it looks.

Anyone else who might have any input on what else to put on these handsome boys, please let me know!
