Straws and Eggs from horses with no descendants will start expiring
-
When horses are sent to the archive it checks for living descendants and anyone owning straws/eggs from that horse. This has resulted in a large backlog of horses who have been dead for years but can't clear out because no one is using those straws/eggs. Often because they are in inactive accounts.
If the new system catches a horse with no decedents but does have eggs/straws it will put a 4-year expiration date on those straws/eggs. That means you have 4 seasons to use those straws/eggs up before they vanish.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. I hope as these horses go poof, that clears up lots of server space : )
To clarify:
Once the donor has been flagged for no descendants: even after a live foal is made, ALL their other remaining eggs/straws will still expire within 4 seasons, correct?
If we turn those eggs/straws into embryos, they will no longer be at risk of expiring (since embryos do not expire), correct?
Thank you, Ammit!
I remember when things started getting congested in the past, and I appreciate your proactive work to avoid those issues in the future.Looking for Appaloosas? Check out my Riata account.

Correct. I thought about this, but there really is no way around turning them back. Embryos are indeed not at risk and will not expire. I can't guarantee that will always be the case but I have no plans for embryo expiration at this time. I am guessing we will remove enough horses to not need to do that.Need to contact me? so if the stud has descendants, even if they are deceased, the straws would be safe? im saving some really special straws from old horses, and i would hate to loose them.
-
@MariaChapinFarm3 No, all horses that are in the archive that has no living descendants are automaticly deleted (unless they have straws/eggs retained).ID 108

She is asking about horses with foals and with straws.
Yes, any horse with an actual living descendent is unaffected by this change. If the line is still actively being bred, I am happy to keep it around.Need to contact me? Read this first. Thank you for the clarification : )
Not many of my straws are affected by this. For the few affected that I don’t want to “hatch” them into foals just yet, I find creating and storing embryos to be quite a reasonable solution. Thank you for giving us the ample time of four seasons to get our material sorted.Looking for Appaloosas? Check out my Riata account.

I'm very happy with this, gives you a chance to use those eggs/straws if you still want to, but I have a lot of old eggs and straws I'll never use so it will clean them out for me!Thanked by 1Amgr1992

I realize this might be difficult, or maybe it already exists and I've never seen it because I've never had ones with expirations, but would there be a way to differentiate which are at risk of expiring when we look at the list of straws/ eggs in our freezer? This could either be done with a symbol or the expiration date next to the name. That way, we could easily see which ones we need to use or which may have gone from at risk to safe as other people use straws without needing to go to each individual horse's page.
I apologize if this already exists and I just haven't come across it, yet! -
@Waldgraf, it took me a while to figure out expiration dates, and I often forget which page to use, so I finally wrote it down in my handy-dandy notebook.
One way to see the expiration dates is in your drop-down list on the “Sell Straw/Egg” page.
The format is: Horse Name (# of straws/eggs) -4y
The next season it will say -3y, etc., so -1y need to be used ASAP before the season ends, or they will be deleted.
If it just says Horse Name (#) then those straws/eggs are not affected.
Also, once the expiration date is set on these straws/eggs, it affects them even after a living foal exists. They won’t go from “at risk to safe,” so to avoid deletion they ALL need to be converted to either embryos or foals.Looking for Appaloosas? Check out my Riata account.

Thank you! That's good to know! I've been wondering for ages whether one could tell but it looks like, indeed, I just haven't had ones with expiration dates, yet! Now I know where to check for them.

This will definitely prompt me to finish going through straws and eggs. I found some from 2007 the other day and had already decided that most of those were going to be deleted.
