Egg collection questions
-
I’m interested in doing egg collection from one of my mates in this upcoming breeding season, but I have a few questions for more advanced players that someone can hopefully answer:
- it says that a mass egg flush will result in being unable to breed a mare the rest of the season, but will a basic egg collection (1 egg) also mean I cannot breed or collect from her again that season? How many eggs can we collect before it will tell us she is out until the next breeding season?
-mass egg flush seems to be a less cost effective option (even when getting the max 14 eggs) so what is the advantage over basic egg collection multiple times, if that option is available?
Any answers or other tidbits of information are extremely helpful and appreciated! Thank you! -
Basic collection is a little cheaper, but you can only collect 5 or 6 eggs in a month because you have to wait five days between collections. To get the very most out of a mare, you can collect single eggs most of the month, then flush at the end of the month. I've done that with a couple of mares who were about to age out and ended up with a total of 18 eggs from one, but I only got 13 out of the other mare.
I think it has to be said that collecting eggs overall isn't really a money-making proposition though, not unless you can sell the eggs for like 20 to 40k each. Breeding egg/straw is expensive compared to pastures or hand breeding, and I can't speak for others, but my luck is abysmal. No matter how carefully I match gens and papers, about 90% of my foals from eggs are snipped.~*~ Justa ~*~

:) The only difference between pasture breeding and every other method of breeding is the bonus for the mares. Other than that ( oh, yeah, and twins being a teensie bit more likely with lab breeding) one type of breeding is no more likely to produce altered/show horses than any other.

@JustaSaddleTramp thank you! I didn’t realize there was a 5 day wait period between egg collections. That’s super good to know! I’ve heard the pasture bonus really does make a difference in breeding, but I’m v interested in making sure I can have a few different foals from one mare this upcoming season, to see which stallions May or may not suit her slightly better.
@ConfluenceFarms thank you for the info! It’s good to know the actual odds are no different. -
@BellaVoce Yeah, I hear you. I've flushed a mare a couple times for similar reasons, but I prefer pasture bonuses helping things along. My luck is such that I can get intact solid chestnut foals all the time, but only because I never breed for them. Lol
@ConfluenceFarms Thanks for that clarification! I didn't mean to make it sound like lab foals and hand breeding have different odds, it's just I have bad luck. :\">~*~ Justa ~*~
