PT bootstrapping questions
  • So, I crossed a star stallion (11.9PT) and a blue mare (12.4PT). The resulting filly came out gold (12PT), and I’m considering BA/SBA, but not sure how the odds would be. Does anyone have advice, or recommendations? Is it absolute dreaming to want to bootstrap a line that eventually passes SBA? Filly in question below

  • I would seriously seriously doubt that filly would pass BA. Yes, she is for sure better than her dam, but her sire is somewhere superior to a low star. Or even in star for a number of generations now, and chances are that this filly is low gold

I think that a lot of people like them to (eventually) pass BA, but I have absolutely no rules with my show line. Like I even kept some 4G's that were still red (if they were GORGEOUS). (Thankfully don't get any of those much lately). Usually I just breed those red foals to get auction fodder. However I have more mares than I can handle, so would not recommend that...

I think it just depends on the person! Do what makes you happy!

    Congrats on the 12PT!

  • @HUSG thank you! That is super handy to know, and gives me a really good idea of when to start testing them for BA once they’re higher-papered.

Thank you!’y ultimate goal is to get as close to a 15PT without boosting :) and a line of high star/gold horses that will create some lovely show ponies. I’ll eventually get the hang of this ;)
  • I found quite a few bootstraps passed BA after a few generations starting from foundation mares, I didn't use my absolute best stallions on a 2nd or 3rd bootstrap cross to have them pass BA though. Passing SBA is quite a bit harder though. There is a big range on the Gold/Stars and there is no notes on the Star stallions in the pedigree to say if they were superior to sire or not, but I still think you'd be very lucky to have your filly pass
  • If I were you I would only start to BA them after several generations - loads won't pass so only do it if you don't mind them failing. I only BA my studs because I don't need them all. If I did BA on my fillies I would loose maybe 95 out of a 100 if I used my best stud! I find by 4th-5th gen I am getting more to pass. Only do it if you are doing a major cull or else you will be crying! :D

PM me if you ever fancy any of my stock. Always got good (small) bootstrap studs.
  • @kintara thank you! I will have to test my stallion to see if he’s StS and let that help guide me a bit better. That is awesome advice!

@DinaChill that is a very smart idea, only BA testing the studs. I will eventually have to start doing major culls...I won’t have room for all my horses after about two more breeding years! Time to start saving for ANOTHER barn I suppose. On the plus side, BAing and culling all those horses after 3-5 gen will mean that I should have the color setup and PT scores I’m hoping for, quite firmly cemented. And that is always great!

  • I started with bootstrapping , and didn't even try even breeding til I started buying genes. I still have a couple pages of uneven girls I breed for show fodder as the mood strikes. I find with BS girls if I want to keep them for breeding I just hit the No Testing button up by geld/spay so I don't accidentally BA them. Boys get gelded almost instantly regardless if they pass or not. Right now I'm trying to add some younger high PT to my show barn.

  • I've been bootstrapping since I started in seriously breeding in March 2018 and now I'm getting colts and fillies that pass BA (not a ton but I breed around 1000 mares). I started with a mid range Star stud but was able to get to super high Star boys from Dark Star and they have been my main studs. I started with foundation mares and low Reds. I have now purged all Reds and most Blues from my herd because I get almost all Golds. I started BAing most of my new Gold fillies each season to work on decreasing the Mare Lag in the herd. I do let all 13+ PT fillies and the fillies of my new boosted STS studs skip BA.

If you're looking for more mares or higher PT colts I have a bunch of Blue mares available for public brood (most already done for this season) and a ton of stallions/colts available for sale (some who are BAed).

  • I only BA the fillies when half-ish of the colts from the same sire are passing, or if i really need to cut down on numbers.

  • I have been bootstrapping for a while now. My star boys are quite high, not quite as good as Dark Star’s but getting up there. I’ve been working on this to the point that I now only have Gold mares in those pastures, but some of them are quite low Golds. I’m not BAing the foals from my 3 very best boys, but I’m BAing the fillies and SBAing the colts from my slightly lesser boys now.
