Why different Era's on similarly bred horses?
  • I have been breeding my G3 foals, all evenly bred, and I have gotten Era 3, 4, and 5 foals - era 3 and 4 from the same stallion, bred to similarly papered and bred mares.

Does the ERA value correspond to breeding quality? I know that in foundation horses, anything up to a Perfect foundation is Era 5, but Exceptional Producers are all Era 4. (I use this to sort my stock).
But what does Era 3 mean? Is it better breeding quality than Era 4?

  • For example:

    Era 3 foal

And here is an Era 3 foal from the same pair that didn't pass SBA:

  • My understanding (and I'm also pretty new so someone may have a better explanation) is that the Era is primarily for grouping horses on Club leaderboards so that they're competing against lines that had a similar starting point. So as you've noted a plain foundation right now is Era 5, but an exceptional producer is Era 4, meaning that using exceptional producers will give you foals that are competitive against someone who's been playing a little bit longer using unboosted horses. So it indicates foundation quality, but not foal quality necessarily, as going forward each horse gets the Era of the lower-Era parent even if they aren't at the top of what their parents could produce.
  • So the foal inherits the lower of the parents Eras. So your Era 3 foals have a grandsire that is a Nanotech Primer RS, which was an Era 3. So he passed on the Era 3 to his foals, who in turn pass it onto their foals. I don’t recall the exact reason behind the different Eras though.
  • Ah! That explains it. It's not a quality measure as much as a starting point for the line. Got it. Thank you!
  • Yes it always goes to the lower one. :)
Breeding brown/liver/black with white spotting drafts. If you ever fancy straws PM me. PM me if you need help with GE.
  • You can often tell how long a player has been playing by which era their lined horses are in. Mine are era 4 (unless I used someone else's horses!). It only really makes a difference in the breeders clubs leader boards.

  • All eras start at the same quality, however the older eras have much higher quality breeding stock as they have been around longer. New players and players starting new lines can still be competitive on the newer era leaderboards though, makes a more level playing field. We are nearly due for a new era too!
  • Ooo! Saving this one for the FAQ list!
