pigment density and kit lethality
-
So we have figured out that pigment density affects appaloosa patterns. I know that appaloosa and kit patterns are unrelated, but does pigment density affect kit lethality?
I am starting a project to try to breed risky kit combinations - w10, w2, w3, and/or w1 on the same horse. To increase the difficulty of intact offspring I want to throw frame in too. I'm also trying to make this line homozygous sooty and DP. This probably doesn't follow through logically, but will the denser pigment in the areas of the horse that are colored "make up" for the "broken" gene codes that cause the white patterning?

I would say probably not, because breaks in the kit gene (which cause the white to show up) will affect the ability of other essential things. The more broken the Kit gene is by mutations, the more likely something will become fatally broken so the foal dies in utero.
From UC Davis: The KIT gene has crucial function for the development of blood, gonadal and pigmentary tissues. I'd say that it's the interference with the first two functions that is important.

The pigment of the coat probably wouldn't matter, but we do know that the more white causing genes on a horse the higher their WF will be pushed, thus the more likely for lethal combinations. Off the top of my head the genes that cause this are frame, splash, and w20. Appy does not increase the WFProducer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable.

While I absolutely LOVE the interaction of Frame with each of the Kit patterns you’ve listed, I would recommend that you start just mixing the Kits without adding Frame, or at least without putting it on your stallion, because I think that could be a very frustrating and disappointing project if you try to do too much all at once.

The stallion won't have frame, and I don't have any foundie mares with it yet either. I'm not super invested in this line, I'm pretty much just interested in seeing how far it will go before all foals end up lethal. It's mostly to satisfy my own curiosity!ID 43830
