Chickies!
  • I'm a "crazy chicken lady". I LOVE chickens and other poultry! <3 At one point, i had over 80 adults, plus an undetermined amount of chicks, some rare breeds, a dozen ducks and 5 dozen quail. But currently i live in a town, so can't have tons of poultry or other livestock. (I also had goats, couple cattle and a few potbelly pigs.) I only have bantams (miniature chickens) at the moment and i'm eagerly awaiting the time when my new babies are old enough to sort through so i can decide which will stay and in what pen. I'm so excited i just want to talk chicken all day, but don't really have much for chicken friends, so y'all get to hear everything! :))<br />
I bought an assortment of clean legged bantams and some cubalaya, and they are 3.5 weeks old. I'm starting to be able to tell sex on most of them now. I'm happy i have a trio of duckwing Phoenix, plus 2 white Phoenix i'm sure are pullets. I'm sad my cubalaya are looking like only 1 girl though, since this was the only breed i had ordered specifically. I have a pair of barred rock, a pair of Japanese, a splash rosecomb (girl?) and 3 Easter eggers (can't sex yet). There are 3 buff colored chicks that are probably orpington and 2 columbian colored chicks i haven't decided what breed i think they are yet, none i can sex yet. (Should add up to 22 chicks)

Combine these babies with the 3 mixed hens and 2 mixed cockerels i already have, also bantams, and i have a lot of options at 27 birds. I have 3 coops that can hold 10 adults each, but of course i wont be keeping all the extra boys.

My original plan was to keep the cubalaya together, then keep the Phoenix and Easter Eggers together, and then all the rest in one for a total of 3 coops. I'd keep 1 or 2 boys max per pen, depending on how many and what breeds of hens. But since it's looking like i only have one cubalaya girl, it doesn't make much sense to do that until I can get more girls. So i'm thinking about alternatives.

I'm thinking now i'll keep all the Phoenix together with a pair of cubalaya - that's 7 birds. I'll be able to tell the eggs apart and will be able to tell mixed chicks from pure chicks. But i don't know what i want to do with all the rest! :-?

  • You would get along good with my Dad. He is a chicken lover and also spreads bird feed out to attract the quail and pheasants in the area. At one point in time we also had two ducks. One was a wild duck we had found alone in the horse pasture so my Dad bought a duck friend for him.

I love when my Dad has Bantams around since they are so colorful. My favorite birds are the black and dark brown ones with white mottled in. Amazing what a wide variety they come in.

  • P.S. Good luck with your decision making. Sounds like you’re going to have a large brood in no time!

  • My dad used to have hundreds of chickens, so many breeds and projects I lost track! My favourites were always the feather footed bantams though!
  • I only have one feather footed one, one of my mixed hens is a mille fleur d'uccle mixed with some kind of game. She's a buff color with black and white spots all over, very cute. I live in Kansas and when it rains, it gets so muddy, i don't want to worry about soaked feathered feet, so i try to stay away from them. I'm thinking i might keep only the cubalaya and Phoenix boys, and so i can use the extra cubalaya boys in the other pens. Should make for interesting crosses, some sexlink colors, so some i'll be able to sex at hatch. But o still want to see how the rest turn out, as far as how many boys and girls.

I'll post links to the breeds later, so y'all can see what i'm talking about. :)
