Criteria for Purging Show Ponies?
  • How do you set yourself up for success? Do you have criteria for which of your altered horses go in the show string and which get booted to auction? Do you simply hoard all the show ponies? Do you go through and give the underperformers and freeloaders the boot?

I'm working on building a successful show string. My gut says to cull those with "inconsistent" aptitude, but maybe I should just hoard them all? I'm up for advice and suggestions!
  • Mine have to be at least 10 pt score or they go into auction. That's pretty much my only criteria.
  • I hoard them all, except snipped foundations and gen 2 snipped foals with PTs under 10.0. They get sent to auction, but everything else tends to go into the show barn. I have a ton of show ponies and I’m on 500k/night show bonus. That’s a bit extreme for most people, but the only way you get to be self sustaining is to build up that show herd!

I do require my breeding herd to be Consistent, but allow my show herd to be inconsistent.
  • Thanks for all the input! Sounds like I’ll be keeping all of my snipped babies and throwing them in the show barns from now on.
I just bought 2 - 210 stall barns to build my show herd. I have been out of room for a while now, but I’m finally getting some show pony space. I’ll probably be adding barns regularly, since I have around 65 foals a season that don’t pass SBA. It doesn’t take long to start building a decent sized herd with that many horses being added each month. I hadn’t been prioritizing my show strong much, but it’s definitely time, since I’m only at a little over 5k daily bonus. That extra money definitely comes in handy since I can’t stop buying shiny horses haha!
  • I keep and show everything.

When replacing barns I buy 210 for my breeding horses (each generation has a barn to themselves) this server is still a mishmash if sizes so I sell back the smaller barns when I want more breeding space.

For my show horses I buy 1000 stall barns and my show horses pay for it all. By the time I’ve filled the last 1000 stall barn I’ve converted enough money into IV’s to buy the next one.

On HJ1 I started to feel overwhelmed when it came time to buy the 5th barn and I sat down and did some calculations and decided that I’d put a cap on show horses and my daily show bonus (I was just under 10mil just in show bonuses per breeding season which at the time was 2 months) so I started tattooing all of my show horses and just finished last month. Now any horses that I bred myself from horses owned by me are sold off between 10-15 years old to make room for my new crop of foals.

  • I just went through 2 barns of older show horses and checked the ones that had leveled off to make sure they were in an ok place. If they leveled off in last place, I auctioned them (or moved them to my new "no show" barn), to make room for higher performers down the road.

I used to cull show horses under 10.2pt, but I've changed that to 9.4 -- depending on where they end up in their class, horses in that range can be good earners!

For example, this 2nd gen mare has a PT of 9.6 and has 600+ points at the age of 12:

Same with this one at 9.9PT and 11 years:

When my herd gets larger I may change my methods, but for now I'm just holding on to almost everything. What I've actually started doing is culling breeding stock instead. I've cut down my number of foundation breeders and gotten more strict with my requirements for gen 2 mares as well.
