Snowflake or Just An Imposter?
  • So I got this guy today in my pasture foals. He looks (to my untrained snf eye) like he is hom snowflake. I know he is at least het due to parentage. However, he isn't registerable in the snowflake breeder club. So is he SNF or just a very convincing imposter?

  • Yup! I'd bet my first born he's a snowflake. But, you should be able to add him to the breeders club to verify.
  • I agree with Waldgraf. That isn't simple varnish at work, looks like snowflake! Varnish would be more spread out, less defined. Looks like mum is a hidden carrier!

  • Definitely looks like snowflake, and he's been genetic tested and isn't a fantasy gene carrier and isn't in four clubs already, so I don't see why you wouldn't be able to register him. Maybe just try again?

  • It worked this time! He is definitely Hom snf! Now I’m extra sad that he got snipped, between the snowflake and those intense dun markings :’(

  • I went back and looked at mom’s pedigree. The SNF came from her sire, who I own, but gelded last season since I didn’t use him anymore! Lame!!

However, I have a bunch of fillies I retained from him, so I probably have a bunch more hidden snf running around in those mares!

  • At least you know where it came from! I know of some cases where it pops up in later generations and there is no hint of snowflake in one line of pedigree.

  • Yeah, Snowflake can be naturally generated in a created foundation, so it can be impossible to find out who has it.
  • A lot of his daughters went into my chinchilla program. Now I want to make a Hom Chinchilla, Hom SNF stallion to see who carries. Somebody stop me!
  • I'm Shifting Sand's breeder. If you're interested in another stud, i might have a half brother. Or i can get you straws from King Louie II.

  • @Haltanny Wait, does King Louie carry snowflake? I own some of his offspring!

  • Looks like King Louie the second's dam is hom snowflake, as well as het kp.

  • @HTRanch King Louie does not, as far as i know, but his son King Louie II is het from his dam. I'm not sure if Junior got the KP though.
