Lethality Question: Was it her w20?
  • I crossed this stallion on two mares, and only got one live foal. It was a pasture breeding, so I didn’t get a notification about the foal like I would when hand breeding. Alas, only one foal showed up in pasture.

He is a pretty loud, high risk boy (splash, w2, frame, extensive WF), so I try to be careful with pairing him. This was the mare I used:

Was it her w20? I had (mistakenly, obviously) assumed this was a pretty safe cross. I usually know what went wrong, but this one caught me by surprise!
  • If you tap on the link and scroll down it will show the white lethality chart.

W2 + W20 shows a low risk of the foal not making it but it isn’t impossible so that must’ve been what happened because the mare doesn’t have any other white genes.

  • I would guess this foal got everything—W2 and W20, Splash, Frame and high White Factor. So it’s not so much her W20 as it is the small possibility of the foal getting ALL the genes instead of just some of them. I think it’s a 1/16 chance that the foal got all 4 pattern genes...just bad luck rather than bad management!
  • Thank you both for the confirmation!
