Breeding quality limits
  • We have pretty much hit the breeding quality cap in HJ2 now, and a few people look like they have boosted above it now by the looks, and if they boosted too far it will be impossible to get intact foals. In HJ1 quite a few of us did a double boost of top horses, cloned them and boosted again to get those 15PTs. I'm trying to resist the same here, I have a few close to the cap so would be easy to double boost them but they would only be ever for breeding show horses/bootstrap. Should we try and get the highest PT possible? Would be a bit fun!! Probably not necessary, I just feel a bit obliged to keep up with the top horses! I think what I'd really like is find that sweet spot where I boost a horse only 1 or 2 percent past the cap so I can still get get intact foals with BA but he can also give me fairly good foals, I have a lot of high gen horses so just wondering what I should do with them! Well I know they will always produce show horses for me but of course no progression from here on. I just need to focus on low generations and bring them up I think!

  • Congratulations on reaching this point! You have an impressively wonderful stable. I love looking through your evenly-bred pedigrees and visualizing how many horses it takes to reach 8+ gens!

Have the outer limits of quality ever been adjusted before? Have breeding levels ever been added, or could they be added in the future? I have not been around nearly long enough to experience The Beginning, and I only know the current C to Star system.

There are still a lot of color names available on the dam side, and stallions could use... other shapes? I’m not sure if this has been discussed before, and I know adjusting or overhauling the current levels would require a LOT of work. If this has been discussed previously, and you know Ammit’s stance on the desirability or even feasibility of adding levels, please let me know.

Meanwhile, if you’re really bored: At what gen, on average, are your horses approaching the quality cap? Could you restart a line with the objective of reaching that same point of quality in fewer even gens? If B/Red is too slow of a start, using all foundation A/Blue, if you REALLY want to be ambitious.

I have not done the math to calculate the financial logistics of adding 5% breeding boosts to an entire line of ExPerfects, but I’m guessing it lands somewhere between Oof That’s Painful, and Gonna Go Cry Now.

Thank you for starting this discussion! Your barn is a great inpiration.

  • That would be a great idea! One of my eventual goals is trying to reach gold/star in three gens, whether that's by using a/blue or just by using extreme quality control from experfs. I used to think that a roughly 5-6% jump was all that was possible, but I just recently found out one of my B boys out of a C/yellow pairing tested AGA a second gen A out of experfs, which means that B has to be within a couple points of 110, out of 100% parents. Given that, and starting with experfs (105%), you could aim for the second gens to be roughly 112 ish and third gens to break the 120 mark that I'm guessing gold/star sits at - so theoretically possible, if a bit labor intensive in making sure you use a benchmark stud for second gen, and only allowing a/blue 2Gs to stay intact.

Open barn policy - no closed lines! I'm always selling straws and eggs from anything I have that catches your eye, don't hesitate to PM me and ask!
  • On hj1 in the past the papers were adjusted at least once (for sure, although I feel like maybe actually 2-3 times) to spread them out a bit.

Although I feel like it caused drama at first when some of the horses paper levels dropped since people don’t like change even when it’s good for them.

  • So the breeding cap is before they get to the point of being able to throw 15 pt foals? I thought that was the cap. It is kinda sad to hear we may already be there because I was so excited to keep breeding up to superior to sire colts and boosting/ not posting however I felt and then keeping going up again. Guess this means I will probably be staying with my current new boosted boys now instead of jumping to better boys anytime soon, but now I feel a little foolish. Keep on trying to get better and have fun seeing how well I can get my uneven to do on the leaderboards. What happens when several barns are all maxing out at a standstill? What do the leaderboards on hj1 look like? This constant going up with bootstrapping has very much replaced the rest of my lines as my favorite thing to the point where I sometimes don't even breed anything else... but now I'm wondering what to do... I guess I can use my mares to try to bring ND1 into my herd after I try to see if I can get intact foals out of Falkaur since I have gotten a total of 14 intact fillies from stallions that test aga to him (Out of over a hundred breedings with pasture bonus when usually I would have closer to 30-40 intact fillies from the number of bootstrap breedings I did)
Anybody got a good ND1 colt for sale? XD

  • What is the cap?

I am striving for both highest quality breeding quality unboosted even lines, and just started striving for the highest PTs I can get with boosting.

  • The cap I think is roughly equivalent to 14PT, the 15PT foals on HJ1 came from double boosted stock. I'm not bored so much, I still have my young lines, and lots of new fantasy gene foundations to bring up, just a realisation that my higher gens can't really progress from here on in, although my mares still need improvement. I don't think there ever used to be a cap, or at least we didn't know it existed until we hit it anyway! Boosting wasn't around in the early days though. I doubt the cap will get moved. The paper adjustment was good, but just reflected the higher level horses that were now in the game
