Nd1 slightly confused...
-
Ok obviously I’ve missed something. Everything I’ve read about the gene, led me to believe it doesn’t show itself if the dominant D gene is present. So a horse with both Nd1 and D should look like a normal dun... At least that’s how I understood it. But then today I created this Grullo Dun mare that has both Nd1 and D and the Nd1 shows... So can someone explain this to me?

Regular Grullo can sometimes show other primitive markings besides the dorsal stripe, but they don't necessarily have them. The one you posted as an example is one with only the dorsal stripe.
Here's one that has a cross bar on the withers, although it's not as prominent as the broad one that nd1 usually gives.
JLd SS Chronic
This one shows the zebra stripes on the legs and a dorsal stripe. I can't tell if there is a cross bar on the withers, because of the mane.
SESUnit
Here's a smokey grullo with a slightly broader shoulder cross bar and zebra stripes.
A Kings Champion
It's a little hard to tell, because of the roan, but I think this horse has a shoulder bar somewhere between the one you're questioning and the one just above here.

I'd say that the primitive markings are variable in intensity, and the nd1D mare you're questioning just got a very emphasized shoulder bar and dorsal stripe.
Ammit may come along and clarify this issue for us, though.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Ok I’m just really curious. My mare also has a lighter mane and tail than most Grullos I’ve ever seen. Grullo usually have black manes and tails. Mine has a set the same color as her coat which is consistent with the Nd1 gene.

I also found this. I think D is dominant but Nd1 enhances itDivineDreams ~ 30908

This one of mine has D and Nd1, and also shows a heavier dorsal marking than I might have expected.

I looked up all the horses that are D and Nd1 and it looks like it’s a toss up on whether they have the Nd1 look. So is it just something the re-roll can change? Or something else?

I am not sure what is going on just yet.
D does not turn off ND1. That isn't how genetics works. Both are active if you have both.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.

I used to have a pet theory that sooty increases the prominence of primitive markings but they aren't always correlated, so had to discard that idea. Both these horse are hom sty and DD, but have different presentations of primitive markings.

My one D and nd1 horse also had large shoulder bars. Her mane and tail are also on the lighter side, but I think that's a result of her LP.

So I think you’re saying how Dun looks can be altered by Reroll.
Is Nd1 the same as Dun? -
Nd1 is not as dynamic as I would like. I am hoping to completely rebuild dun this year. We will see if that happens.Need to contact me? Read this first. Only send me a PM for PayPal issues or if I ask you to. Otherwise, make a forum post. You will get a better faster answer by making a post.

I look forward to whatever changes you make. Dun is a favorite of mine, which is why I’m so curious on how it works.
-
No, nd1 is not the same as Dun, BlaxDiamond. It is a different allele or form of the Dun gene. The name stands for first non-dun mutation. The third form of the gene, nd2, is the second non-dun allele and is, I think, by far the most common version of the gene considering all horses world wide. it is recessive to both of the other versions and does not cause primitive markings or any dilution of the basic coat color.De gustibus non disputandum. Ammit, it's probably a long shot, but if you are rebuilding dun... can we have bider markings?
