Draft Foal from Two Warmbloods?

I have to say, I literally laughed out loud when the foals picture loaded. Is this normal to generate a draft foal from two foundation Warmbloods? (Still new to the game here.)

Thanks in advance for any input!
  • I've had it happen before. I've even had Warmblood from daft. Etc. I've even gotten a draft from two cobs, because the foal exceeded cob height. Lol

  • Awesome, thanks for the speedy reply! I've since stood him to several other mares to see if the stallion is the catalyst(no luck). Guess I'll wait and breed him to the same mare next month to see if I get the same outcome. I got a good chuckle and just wanted to share. :)
  • Let me look at the foals parents. Whoever has the bigger bone weight is responsible, most likely.

  • They both have a very similar bone weight. One 2.25, one 2.24. So it's probably just this mix completely.
Let me bring in @Lallyhop! :D

  • There is always a range of possibilities for any characteristic of a horse, and for mares and stallions, a range of possibilities for the characteristics of their foals. So, since the top bone weight for warmbloods is 2.4 (2.5 is the start of draft/cob bone weights), it is fairly easy to see that the top of the bone weight range available for their foal could push up into the draft category.

Ammit has said that it is possible to start with ponies and work up to 18 hand horses or vice versa, to start with light horses and end up with drafts and so on.

  • Yep! Just as SandyCreek said. There's a pretty decent range, probably .2 or .3 bone on either end of the biggest/smallest parent from what I've seen.

    For future reference:
Riding horse ends at 1.49 and warmblood starts at 1.5, and ends at 2.49 where draft starts at 2.5. For the low/high end, the lowest bone in the game right now is a 0.41, this pretty lady owned by @Ren.

...well, the lowest is zero, but that looks like a glitch horse. :P

As for the highest, @wayfarer has a cool project of breeding for bone only, and has a handful over 4 bone, with the highest being a 4.15 bred this year.

  • Oh look that's one of mine! Thanks for the tag. ;) Didn't even realize she was the lightest bone weight in the game but, given that new knowledge, she earned herself a name now at least. Hahah

  • wow, thanks everyone for the bundle of knowledge you just threw my way! So far, I've only been playing to teach myself about color genetics on Warmbloods. You've all just really opened up the playing field. @lallyhop thanks for giving me the range on bone density- I was playing with the numbers yesterday because I finally looked into purchasing a liver chestnut as a Herd Helper and was having a heck of a time trying to narrow it to WB only.

  • I was thinking about this thread this morning when I opened this girl's page to age her up. Out of 2 warmblood parents, she has 2.52 bone, so she's just over the edge into draft territory. Her parents were 2.43 and 2.22, so I guess they threw from the top of their ranges!

(Of course, I prefer drafts, so I am over the moon about this!)

Edit to add -- here's an example of the opposite direction! Two draft parents, warmblood foal with 2.48 bone.

  • @Lallyhop I'm really amused that you noticed @Wayfarer's bone project! He's breeding for 'Chunky Shorties', he wants the fattest smallest horses in the game haha.

  • @Bourbon Haha, that's awesome! Yeah, I was bumping the bone weight up in search incrementally to find the heaviest, and the last dozen or so were all Wayfarer's. Sounds to me like a line, and one with some sweet progress, too! :D

  • I got this warmblood from two draft parents...I was pretty shocked, to say the least! But Lavishing’s bone weight is only 2.53, so I’m assuming she threw the lowest end of her range, and we got this little fella. I will likely GMT him into a draft weight at some point.
