Feeling Accomplished! ~Mare Culling and Line Improvements~
-
So i have been going through the intact mares in my barns (not pastures) and doing a lot of snipping! I just want to say, I started with 52 pages of mares and I am currently at 15 pages left! Six of those pages so far are keepers, but I might even cull those ones down farther as I tighten up my lines :) I wish I could buy about a million pastures! I have so many lines I want to work on but no space to do so! But I am switching my old lined lines (3G+) to my newer ones so that's why so many mares are being snipped.
-I decided that my main focus is going to be Mushroom and Chinchilla with Snowflake and KP, as well as some ice 9 thrown in here and there. Those will be my two main lines. (I really hope we get a Chinchilla Breeders Club!)
-My next line is going to be my Ice 10/Wrong Warp/Thunderstruck line. Since i don't have the means to accomplish this at second gen, i want to get a good stud with all three genes by 3rd gen and breed the whole pattern into 4th gen.
-Newest side line is going to be Nacre/Watercolor/Ice 9 grays. This will be similar to the above line in which it will take several generations to accomplish. I am starting with a 60 acre pasture full of gray foundation mares and a homozygous Nacre stud. From there, the resulting foals will be bred to either a Watercolor or Ice 9 stud. So by 3rd gen i should have two of the three genes. Then the 3rd gen foals will be bred to a stud that has whatever gene i didn't introduce in the previous generation.
-Satin is going to be distributed throughout the lines as well as all my ice genes
-Axiom and Nexus will just be side bonus lines, not as important as my other ones, until i can afford pastures.
-Every other closed gene i haven't mentioned will be mixed in where i deem necessary or desired.
I just feel so accomplished getting all this stuff done and organized :) I can't wait til I have everything sorted just how I like it!Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

That ice9 line sounds so dreamy!ID 43830

Congrats on the organization! I have found that I feel so much better when I get things sorted. I have too many lines and right now, way too many foundation stallions just bristling with closed genes. I have taken to alternating with my foundation mares. This year was the year of fantasy foundation studs, next year I will concentrate on the non-fantasy studs. I desperately need to reorg again.Thanked by 1AHayesHorses

I love culling. It’s very satisfying to see the page numbers go down lol
I usually bounce back and forth between the 2 servers.
I’m currently working on HJ1 culling my studs and working on finishing tattooing my herd. Last weekend I started with 263 pages of horses to tattoo and ended up with 40 after a day of Harry Potter movies and Downton abbey thanks to Netflix (and remembering that we can bulk tattoo) lolBreeding even generation Grullos with IceThanked by 1AHayesHorses -
I love organizing and getting all of the lines cleaned up! Good luck with all of your new and continuing lines, sounds like you have a lot of fun genes planned. :)
I'm currently doing the same thing you are but I'm probably another month out before I'll be where I want to be since I'm still saving all my pennies for that elusive 1000 stall barn which will really open me up to be able to move and organize everything, pastures included.ID: 40723Thanked by 1AHayesHorses -
@Ren I have a 1000 stall barn on HJ1 for my foal sorting (which I love) but I just finished moving my 4year olds out into show barns but still have to make space for about 500 more 2year olds to clear it out completely for my foals. That number keeps changing as I cull my colts as I keep throwing them back into the foal barn to make space in the breeding barns lmaoBreeding even generation Grullos with IceThanked by 1AHayesHorses

Where do you start with your mares? I am really thinking about this but nit sure where to start with it.Thanked by 1AHayesHorses

I start by pulling up the search for all my mares that are in my barns, not pastures. I snip everything that is 15 or older. Then, i go through page by page basically just snipping everything from my older lines, only keeping them intact if i know for a fact that i will use them for breeding. Sometimes the snips are hard to do so i have to come back to them but in the end, it's always for the best. I'm culling 90% of my old lines to make way for the new ones. So as i go through, whichever mares don't fit in with my new lines, get the immediate snip! It's so satisfying to see the numbers go down :)Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755
