Does anyone want to help cull mares?
-
I love my breeding stock. I have way too many. I've about got my studs under control, but I need to drop my mares by about 30. The intention is to clip them and put the best of my stock in primary pasture, I just can't seem to clip anyone.
These are my goals:
Drafts
Black or Brown
Appy
Dark genes
Nexus
Snf
Champagne
Sb1
These are my mares:
Mares
Please post suggestions to clip.
If you find a mare, who needs culling, you'd rather trade for a show pony... I'm open to that. -
My first suggestion is if you want to breed only for drafts, spay all your warmbloods. Only keep intact those that have every single gene you want and are close to bone weight of 2.5.

And if spaying all your warmbloods is too much, just spay all under 2 bone, or under 2.3. My draft bootstraps currently have a bone cutoff of 2.40, and you can keep working that upwards.
I'd also suggest looking for any that are papering below where you want them - if you don't know where that is, setting relatively easy paper goals might help you sort that out.
You can also require mares to be black/brown, have a copy of appy or darkening genes, AND have at least het nexus, snowflake, champagne, or sabino1 - that will cull out a few of the easier to replace, plainer ones. (At least the non foundations - you might just require appy and/or darkening on the black/brown for the foundies. Maybe cull some bay carriers in the foundies).
And of course you can do a mix - maybe cull somewhere around ten on each criteria, some more or some less. What one horse lacks in one area they may be great in another, so you might just let one slide in favor of culling one that's "okay" all around but not great in any area.
For example, I have a strict policy of no yellows in my bootstraps - even the foundations have to be reds - but there's one single second gen yellow that I keep because she consistently throws me the most beautiful foals that usually paper A/blue, so she's worth just as much to me if not more than a red foundation that also throws A/blues, maybe slightly higher A/blues, but plainer.
This is my favorite filly from her - the color is just to die for :x
The Girl On Fire
So yeah, it varies. I usually cull on a mix of genes and papers, with weight also in there but a slightly lesser concern, and it usually works out well!ID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines! It really offends me. On my other accounts I have some sliders, but mostly keep things manageable. On here... Every time I pull a search to cull I want to slide everyone.

Oh gosh, one of those feelings - I dunno, sometimes it helps me to do one of two things: first, to ask myself to cull X number of mares (and start with a small number, like 5 or maybe 10). Then, of the ones I want to let slide, I'm forcing myself to pick and choose which one I love the least, rather than culling a bunch I love.
Second, sometimes I just have to get in a bad mood (or a "nothing matters I'm dead inside" sorta mood, lol!). Culling angry can be a bit dangerous, of course, depending on how wild you go, but it can sometimes give you that extra kick, as long as you can stop yourself from culling your favorites on minor criteria :))
(I might also suggest culling when slightly tipsy, but alas, I don't know your age so maybe not ;) )ID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines! I'm always selling straws and eggs from anything I have that catches your eye, don't hesitate to PM me and ask! -
If you are after brown you could cull those with the bay genes or if you are after dark then cull those without sooty. Or at least those that are hom S or hom A. :)Breeding Tiny Bootstraps
PM me if you ever fancy any of my stock. Always got good (small) bootstrap studs. -
I would recommend culling the A or A+ because with either of those genes it automatically removes your ability to have a or At which you stated is a goal. Then I would recommend cutting all of your mares that do not have at least one sty or S+. After that it just depends on how picky you want to be. You could decide that a horse of each continuing generation must have X number of desirable genes to remain. So gen one could only have to have 3 desirable traits (genes or things like paper, PT, AFPT, etc). Gen 2 would have 4 desirable traits and so on and so forth.

Apparently I have a weakness for gold champagne appy's. I found 36. They don't belong. Now I just gotta snip them.45120

If you want Blacks and Browns start by snipping any ee girls.

I'm trading out my ee girls for preclipped youngsters thanks to someone awesome. They found a good home, so I don't have to cry.
Have I mentioned how much I love you guys?
