Questions About Selling Straws
-
I’m new to offering straws, but I have an awesome Hom chin SplashM stud that I’m offering this season. I see a lot of people offering “garaunteed straws”, how do you go about that? What’s the process? Also, for those of you who offer straws and have experience, what rules/conditions do you place on the pairings of any? Any and all advice welcome!

I don't believe we are allowed to place conditions on the use of straws sold in the open forum. At least, we may not set conditions on the use of a stallion standing for public stud. We may set conditions on breedings offered in a chat room, however.
When a straw is "guaranteed," the seller guarantees that the buyer will get an intact foal. The seller offers another straw (at a reduced rate; I usually charge 1hb.) when given proof of a neutered foal from the use of the straw. This continues until an intact foal is born. For very rare or closed genes, I have been known to guarantee an intact foal with the desired gene. The standard practice is to charge a higher price for guaranteed straws to help cover the cost of pulling them.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Here is a discussion regarding rules on straws/breeding. Ammit stated somewhere towards the end of this discussion that you are allowed to have rules for straws sold on the public forum, but there is no way to guarantee people will follow those rules. You are not allowed to have any rules regarding horses you put on the public searchable breeding list. And horses listed in buddy chats are allowed to have rules as well.
I personally haven’t made any rules for my horses, nor will I. If you are going to pay the money I’m asking, then breed how you see fit. Most people who “stick around”, as they say, are the ones who are respectful of the work others have put into their horses and breed fairly responsibly.
With guaranteed straws, most people offer them for a higher price than a non-guaranteed straw. (Non-guaranteed straw is 5k, a guaranteed is 10k for example) The higher price for the guarantee covers the pull price for any additional straws that would need to be sent until an intact foal is produced. Most guarantees cover a foal that passes Breeding Advice, since not everyone has Strict Breeding Advice. Unless specifically stated, the guarantee does not cover color, gender, genes, paper level, or PT score.
The process for guaranteed straws really falls on the purchaser of the straws. I make a note in the stallions notes of who purchased guaranteed straws and what year, but I do not chase people down to see if they need replacements. That is the purchaser’s job. Most times the purchaser will send a link to the foal in a private message and ask for a replacement straw. Then you just send another straw for 1hb to them, and the process continues until an intact foal is born.
Oh, here is the link to that discussion I mentioned above! Totally got distracted
