Does anyone breed specifically for show horses?
  • I've been getting rid of all my uneven blue/gold mares to focus on my evenly bred Chn, watercolor and i13 lines but was looking at some of my babies from last year and noticed they are doing pretty well showing. Is breeding for show horses a common thing? My stud seems to like to throw me exception show-ers that was purdy too!!! I'm thinking I might keep him for the sole purpose of giving me show babies lol

  • That is the entire reason I have a bootstrap line! Even if I take a year off of breeding I make sure to bootstrap some show foals, mass geld/spray them, and forget about them. My bootstrappers don't even normally get a lot of pasture time, so the mares show too.

  • I have a high star stud that I breed to uneven blue/gold mares strictly for show ponies. He gave me a champion in the w10 Breeders Club this season :)
  • I typically bootstrap and end up with some awesome show babies! Some of my 2 year olds are over 100pts already! Unfortunately, I’m out of barn space for show babies so I’ve been kicking my altered foals to auction the last few seasons.

One of these days I’ll break down and buy a massive show barn with enough room. Until then, I just let them go unless they have a PT score of 12.0 or higher
  • I don’t necessarily breed for show horses but I do cull extensively so have a much higher ratio of show horses to breeders born every year.

Show horses are your money makers. They literally print you money.

They only cost you 1 stall and entry fees each week. Each intact mare you have can cost you a 15 stall barn throughout her life and entry fees if she isn’t in pasture or not much return on your investment income wise if she is in the pasture.

  • It's the main reason I have 7G and 8G horses at all. I much prefer playing with lower generations!

  • Yep! That’s what the colts from my bootstrap line are for. That’s why I get every single bootstrap blue and gold mare I can get my hands on. Although possibly not the smartest thing I don’t even PT test my 3G foals and lower gen. But of course all the non intacts after 4G get tossed in the show line but I don’t specifically breed for show ponies in that line.

  • I, too, have a pasture for producing show horses. Currently it has two unevenly bred *Star stallions that I purchased especially for this purpose and 77 Red and Yellow papered mares. All the offspring automatically get snipped when I remove them from pasture and mass test them. None of them have extremely high PT scores, but they are generally higher than would be likely with even generation or even paper breeding.

  • Yep I bootstrap and I have a whole different account who just bootstraps. Great fun watching the PTs climb up and up and make Doris happy for once :)
Breeding brown/liver/black with white spotting drafts. If you ever fancy straws PM me. PM me if you need help with GE.
  • I don't on this account but on HJ1 I breed specifically for show horses, the more colourful and loudly patterned the better haha! I have mostly blue and gold mares in my pasture and I rotate between a few A and Star stallions every season :)
