Liver Red Dun help
  • So I just realized that while, I’ve gotten good at being able to tell when Chocolate Palominos are Hom DP and when Livers are home DP, I have failed to get any experience with Duns. Since I have several Dun mares in my breeding herd I realized this is a big blunder on my part.

So I was wondering if anyone would be able to show me the difference between Het DP liver dun, and Hom DP liver dun and coach me on how to be able to figure it out on my own.

    (I’m also interested in nd1)

    Thank you.
  • The only real way to tell if a liver dun is Hom or het DP is by looking at the muzzle and lower legs. The muzzle and lower legs of a hom DP will be exceptionally dark, while a het DP will be lighter.

You can’t always tell just looking at the body color, because dun causes variations. The hom DP does make the body darker, but it can be hard to tell. And when you start adding in white spotting genes, frame, splash, and appy that can cause the lower legs or muzzle to be “covered”, it can make it almost impossible to tell. You will really only be able to tell whether het or Hom by using a GMT to check, or by test breedings.

  • With red based nd1 it's seems like you're almost looking at a regular liver in the shoulder patch and legs - practically black hom vs het liver brown. In general, it seems nd1 dilutes the body, but you can use the shoulder patch and legs to see what the horse's true color would have been without it.

  • Ok. I will be doing a lot of considering on whether I’ll put it on my FF stud colt.
  • Well that hom DP ND1 is a Freaky Friday, so that is a good examples of what he would look like.
  • Yah and it looks great. Thank you everyone for all of your help.
