So where your stud says 5G, that means if you pull up his pedigree it's even 5 generations of horses on each side unevens means that their pedigree isn't evenly lined like that one parent horse could have lineage back 18 gens and the other only 3 gens, and there's a possibility of mismatched papers, a lot of people refer to uneven horses as being bootstrapped as well but there's a bit more that goes into a lot of the bootstrap herds then just uneven lines.
Some people don't like to do uneven, some people do unevens only and some people have both and just keep the designated. It's really personal preference :)

When you do drastic changes in paper it can but in my experience if you still keep the papers even (gold/star, blue/A etc.) they seem to be just as equally likely to be snipped as the even papered a lot of people when they do uneven lines don't ba/sba the fillies but all the studs get tested and they breed the fillies back to another star stud until they get up in the golds.
