Culling based on PT?
-
Does anyone cull their horses based on PT? I have a few 4th generation horses that only have PT scores in the low to mid 10s and lately I've been feeling the need to cull them just because their PT score is disappointing (although I know PT score and breeding ability is unrelated) and I'm now breeding 4th generation foals with much better scores. Or would I be better off culling their dam?
Specifically, I am wondering about these two. They both have the same dam (a 3rd gen red papered mare). Neither one has been bred enough to really make a decision on their ability. I now have 3rd gen mares papering blue and am thinking about culling this entire line.

The gen 3 mare threw a 10.8 to my Doux this season...so I wouldn't cull her yet (and I would offer to buy her and the gen 4 mare). No, they aren't great PTs, but I would try to put the young mare to at least one superior gen 4 sire before you cull her...would have been interesting to see this year's filly's PT but she's been yummed.
As far as the colt goes, to me that comes down to how valuable his genes are compared to the rest of your gen 4s. If you have a lot of Pearl, I would sell him or retire him to the show barn. If he's your only Pearl stud right now, I would give him a chance. Again, I would try putting him over the best gen 4 mares you can get your hands on--girls out of Blue mares or who are Blue themselves if you can get someone to put a few up for you. If he's got a high alter rate or his foal PT is not up to snuff after that, snip that boy and show the socks off of him!
I'm having to make some similar decisions so I feel your pain! -
In my opinion its what ever you want to do. I dont cull based on ptLife is Special live it to your fullest

Given that 3G Extra Dark's pedigree includes a B papered grandsire and a rank special granddam, I think those are some pretty dismal 4th gen PTs. I would cull her, for sure. I think she got the short end of the genetic stick.
I never cull based on the mare's own PT, and I don't necessarily always cull the foals of a mare I cull (though that counts pretty heavily against them when I'm looking at who gets culled), but that's your call. You might give the fillies another season or two, to see what kind of PTs they produce and whether their foals stay intact, but I wouldn't blame you at all if you snipped them too. -
I look at the whole picture. I don't mind low PT's in mares. I always test breed, to see if they produce good show horses first. If they don't, then they get snipped, and used as show horses.
EDIT: My lowest mares, Seafoam, 0.2 and So Low, she is gone now, but PT was 0.4, have given me 80% good show horses. their offspring have given me a ton of points, and are all profit horses later in their life. Points for showing bonus is what I look at. My showing bonus is ALWAYS around half a million. I don't test for consistency anymore, I just go by profit/points. When I did test for consistency, so of my inconsistent horses made more profit than my consistent horses. -
I usually cull anything less than 9.6 in my foundations. This is because I have almost all 9.9 PT stallions and I kid you not, every low PT, like 9.0, 5.0, even 3.5, gave me inconsistent and altered babies-- which I also had to cull. I didn't get one in tact, for two breeding seasons out of those mares. I try to keep the PT closer to the stallion's.
