Probably not. It is barely possible that he might pass if he is at the very top of the A range and both parents are at the bottom of the star/gold range, but even if that is the case, he is a step backward in papering from both of his parents.

Most of my bootstrap studs have been A papered. I only just got a couple of star boys this last season.
I am new enough that I only have had foundie mares to put them to anyway. I have one more season before my first set of g2 fillies become breeding age.

Yup! Honestly, even though the climb isn’t quite as quick, it still works great for getting the genes you want, and if you’re lucky you might get a superior or even a low star colt out of a red or blue that can be your replacement bootstrap stud.

My bootstrap pasture this year is covered by two boys: one a homebred star from a lucky dark star straw, the other a lovely A hom satin boy to put more satin in the bunch. I’m expecting to be able to replace the satin boy with his son, a hom satin star I was lucky enough to breed this season, but that’s two years out while I wait for him to grow up. By that point, I’m also expecting at least one superior to sire colt from the other star boy, as my pasture is mostly blues by now.

After a certain point, bootstrapping becomes just like normal breeding with the colts replacing their sires. An A stud will just hit that point faster than a star will.
