Does he carry GP?
-
Ive never really dealt with GP before, so i cant tell... i cant enter him in the club, so i know that he isnt homozygous for it.
I was wondering though, do you guys think that he might be het gp? (The only reason why im asking is because i noticed the coloring of his tail) if not, how can you tell if a horse is het for the gene? Is there a certain letter that represents it? I know its hidden, but i was thinking that since (dp) is a hidden gene as well and you could also tell by the horse having Sty in their genetics- then does gp as well?
Also; Im planning on doing some HEAVY gmting on my stud, so i need to know if i have to add one copy or two for GP.

GP isn't randomly creatable on foundations. What you're seeing is the splash.Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

Ok, thanks :) i thought that since it is a rare gene, that maybe it could pop up every once in a while. (Like snowflake or somethin')
I didnt know splash affected the color of the mane and tail, also.. huh. Thats kind of interesting :) -
As far as we know, KP and GP don't ever pop up on creates, just SNF and DP do.
That being said, though, the way to identify GP visually is only if it's hom on a bay, as that's the only way it shows. Het GP or ee or aa horses won't show it, just like snowflake won't show if het or missing appy. DP is the only one of the four untestables that can affect a horse when het, and doesn't need any other genes involved. KP needs hom and two kit genes.
Splash is something that some people prefer to keep out of their GP lines because you can't see the effect the GP has - they do look very similar.
Here's a GP horse:

You can see how the white in the tail goes up much further than the tiny bit of white visible on the body, but otherwise the look of it is practically the same as yours with splash.
Here's the genetics guide page on it: http://www.huntandjump.com/geneticsguide/?page_id=146ID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines! I'm always selling straws and eggs from anything I have that catches your eye, don't hesitate to PM me and ask! -
And on the note of DP - you actually can't tell if a horse has it by whether or not they carry sooty. You can, however, tell for certain if they're a palomino or a chestnut, and their color name is "liver chestnut" or "chocolate palomino". That means they have at least three darkening genes.
Sooty is a darkening gene, and DP is a darkening gene. A horse can either have 0, 1, or 2 copies of any gene. They need a minimum of 3 darkening genes to be "liver" or "chocolate" if they're a chestnut or palomino. That means either 2 sooty and 1 DP, or 1 sooty and 2 DP. They can also have all four, so 2 sooty and 2 DP, and they'll be even darker than a horse with 3. A chestnut with all four darkening genes will look black until you test them and they read off "liver chestnut", which is why a horse that's hom sooty and hom DP can be called a "black liver".
Any other horses, however, don't have a change in their color name, nor will a chestnut with only two darkening genes, for example. The way you pick out DP is visually - it's a darkening gene, and horses with it look darker than those without. A chestnut with one DP and no sooty will look about as dark as a chestnut with one sooty and no DP, while a horse with hom DP and no sooty will look about as dark as a hom sooty.ID 45703 | he/himOpen barn policy - no closed lines!
