To me, some of the most fascinating effects in-game are appaloosa varnishing and bronzing. It's so cool to watch horses change as they age! In an attempt to better understand and appreciate appaloosa color shifting in-game, I have decided to embark on a (very long-term) project. I'm not sure if this has been done before, but I will be screenshotting pictures of appaloosa horses every month from 1-2 years old to death and then creating animated gifs or "flipbooks" showing the progressive color shifts. I will likely be doing an update every few months until the horses pass away.

Listed below are the foals and two year olds I will be starting with. These horses will never be sold or auctioned so that I can be sure that I will be able to take their pictures every month.

If there are other appaloosa color combos you would like to see, comment below and I will try and find a foal to match!

Feel free to look through my 1 and 2 year old alters for any interesting colors you might be missing. I have browns, DP bay/brown, pearls and other colors you don't have listed.

You can save the images without having to screenshot them. Just go to said horse's page, and save the image however you would normally save an image on your phone, computer, or other electronic device. ;)

Also, this sounds like an amazing project. :D

I have a few foundation blue roan appy mares (they're 4, though), if you'd like one donated! :)

Love this idea! I have some older apps that look stunning with their varnish and didn't have them as babies but would have loved to see them all full of color.

I’ve started my own albums from year to year for my snowflakes, it’s very interesting to see their images refreshed each month and see how much whiter they are!

I'm curious to see if the grey and appy cover up the ice 9, or if the ice 9 overlays either or both. Other grey or appy and ice 9 examples would be cool!

@sumervine The oldest gray ice9 appaloosa in the game is only 7, but by the looks of this one the ice9 will fade out.

I actually have a Grey Ice 9 Roan show boy on the other server and he is very, very, very, pretty! It probably depends on if the ice shows or not with appy like with non varnishing appys.

Right, that makes sense - all the white markings in the game overlay the colors, because those are the 'broken genetics". So the appy will cover the ice 9. Thanks both of you!

Chinchilla does interesting things with bronzing. This horse's base color is black, so the chinchilla shouldn't affect it, but because bronzing reddens the pigment, you can see the effects of chinchilla in her mane and tail.

All uploaded! I'm especially loving how Wilderness looks right now with the gray base and tiny freckles. If you look really closely, Warped Soul is developing some wrong warp turquoise on the back of her front legs and her hocks!
