What does bootstrapping mean?
-
I've seen some people have "bootstrap" barns, but I'm unsure of what that means.Have a nyce day!
-
It means breeding really high quality studs (usually stars) to lower quality mares in an attempt to get really high pt foals faster than even generation breeding does.Thanked by 1nycequestrian

Yes. Bootstrap is breeding highly uneven quality horses to get a large quality jump with the foals of the lower quality horse. I honestly continue o use the term bootstrap for descendants of those crosses down the generations because "4th gen bootstrap" doesn't make much sense. I know these aren't bootstrap isn't the correct term though. Guess that's our next project, defining what to call these more even quality generations past bootstrap. All into high quality black based primitive duns and bootstraps.Thanked by 1nycequestrian

Once your bootstrap herd is bred up to where you are breeding even quality, i call it breeding even quality / paper levels. "Breeding even", in my opinion, should apply to quality, and breeding the same generations should be called breeding symmetrical pedigrees. Just to clear up the confusion, because not everyone that breeds even quality is breeding a symmetrical pedigree, and vice versa.#28036

I used to bootstrap horses during my first year. I kept a pair of higher gen studs and bred them to my foundation mares. I didnt know it had a name at the time though. It was fun because if got to expiremtn with genetics but not worry about the foals much. I always alter the offspring though. I dont like having uneven pedigrees for breeding stock.
I agree with @Haltanny too. Wish there was a more specific way to refer to horses as far as breeding quality and pedigree go. I always refer to my I uneven by the lowest generation. So if you breed a 5th gen to a foundation the baby is an uneven 2nd pedigree wise (just in my opinion)----
