Tattoo and naming question
  • What do most do when you buy a horse as far as tattooing and changing names? I'm curious what other people think!

So far I've been renaming ones I bought only if I really don't like the current name or if they're just a number, but if there's a herd prefix used by their breeder I keep that the same. I haven't tattooed any horses except the ones I breed, but I've noticed some do.

  • Most of the time I wind up renaming solely for the purpose of easy search and identification purposes. I have many lethal genes in my herd, and certain notations in a name warn me at a glance. Tattoos, I don’t have a “bred by” tattoo, but most of my definite keeper horses have certain tattoos to make searches easier. I also won’t normally remove a tattoo that was on a horse I purchased unless it’s in a spot I put my own, and mine won’t cover the previous owners tattoo.

  • For finding the horses I want in my own herd, I add a letter or three at the end of the name so I remember which bloodline they are. (A for appy, L for liver, C for champagne, etc) I usually name for songs on foundations or for bloodlines on lined horses. I'm crazy like that. :D

  • I rename if they’re not named yet. If they’re breeding stock, they get my color and generation suffix code added in. I will try to leave a breeder identification prefix if it was there, but may change it slightly especially if I need more space!

I add my own gene tattoos like pearl or satin but don’t add my daffodil Ausmerican Bred tattoo to bought stock. I rarely remove tattoos.

  • I don't like to remove tattoos period, unless for some reason they don't apply any more (I've seen a couple tattoos belonging to the owner that say "don't sell", etc). Plus it costs money :P

As for renaming, if the name isn't a "name" I usually rename based on the parents, or occasionally I'll tweak a name for capitalization, but if there's already a name I'll usually leave it. If there's "owner letters" in the front of the name I'll leave those too (like "MRs Silver Fire" because I regard that as something similar to a breeder tattoo, but if there's letters like "RS" for rank special or "G4" for fourth generation I'll often remove those, as I have my own ways of keeping track of that sort of thing.

My tattoos are for sorting - so I have my breeder tattoo for the ones I breed, but then I have other tattoos, like one to indicate dp, etc., that I'll stick on any horse I get that applies.

  • Renaming rarely happens here unless the horse doesnt have a name and is intact. I will add or change my own prefix code based on generation, special genes, etc, but rarely do much more thsn that.

Tattoos I only remove if they no longer apply (like Lallyhop said about "don't sell" or or something), or if they interfere with placement of my own tattoos for breeding stock.

  • I typically try to leave brand/stable name tattoos on horses that I buy. If the those has other tattoos that I think look nice I will leave them on also usually I add my stable brand on them.

If the horse comes with a name li usually leave it or tweak it just a little. If the horse doesn't have a name I either change it to something similar from the parents or make up my own

I am very forgetful so if I owe you anything but am taking to long please send me a PM. I don't get on to play the game as often as I once did but I am usually most active during the 2nd and 3rd week of each month
  • I only really change a name if the horse has a number. If it has a name I add it's generation number at the end. I like leaving the tatoos on. Some of the tatoos are really pretty and it's fun to collect horses with different marks.

  • Thank you all! I'm enjoying finding out what other people do. :)
