Ok so has this mare one or 2 copies of DP? My thoughts are one but not sure. If it's 2 I might do some GMTing as she is an Exceptional Perfect.

Definitely one copy, but she looks awful close to some of my Hom Sooty flaxen chestnut creates.

I would say without a doubt she has at least one copy of DP because she is to dark for a horse without any sty gene. She very well maybe 2. The only way to really find out would be to GMT one sty onto her. If she comes back liver then you know she has two copies because you have to have three darkening genes to be liver.

She has no sooty at all at the moment - one sooty and she will either go to liver (and have double DP and a sooty) or she will go a darker chestnut (and just be single DP). She must have at least one copy

I think she has a good possibility of being hom. Compare to my two below, one is a known het dp and the other is a hom sooty. Your girl is noticeably darker/redder than my het DP, and comparable to my him sooty.

I might try and sell her - not sure as I can throw lots of GMTs at her myself - I will want to take her bay off too and prob make her a stallion ... (list goes on! LOL!)

Oh, I wasn’t going to do GMT work, I was just going to breed her as is to a hom DP Stud.

How about this mare? She looks dark for one copy of sty. I need her to a hom dp stallion to test it out. The foal was chocolate liver but inherited sty from her so I still have no proof.

@HTRanch I don't think your girl has DP at all. I have lots of het sooty chestnuts that are the same color.

How do you tell if a liver or chestnut that is hom Sty has DP too? I have a filly I think should have it, but I'm totally just guessing. lol Her genetics are pretty much the same as her dam, but she's a liver and her dam is sooty chestnut, so I figure she has to have gotten something different from her sire. His genetics say the same thing too, but his color is completely different, nearly a black liver.

Her sire is a Freaky Friday RS. They carry two copies of DP guaranteed. The DP, which is an untestable gene, when combined with sooty, causes liver when three of the genes are present. Your filly picked up one of her sires copies of DP. Her sire is a black liver, meaning he has all 4 copies.

Palominos also can express DP, but they are called chocolate. Other red based horses can display the darkening that DP causes, but they don’t have a name change.

Thank you for the explanation! So if I cross her back to another black liver later on I should have a 50% chance of hom DP, 50% het like her. That's what I've been trying to figure out. lol I've been crossing sooty chestnuts and trying to figure out why none of the foals were livers even though the genetics were the same as livers I saw. That's why I bred to Cartoon Graveyard when I was searching for a first gen liver at stud and saw him. I hoped as dark as he is, he'd tip the scales from sooty chestnut to liver. He did, and now I know why! Thanks! :D

You are most welcome, the Freaky Friday guys are a perfect starting place for building a liver line. There are quite a few floating around that I’m sure people would sell straws from or let you breed directly to. I’m trying to breed exclusively liver and chocolate right now. Good luck!

I have a lot of horses that are hom Sty, and I've been wondering about what it was that makes a chestnut into a liver. I see them posted often and it's never a bad plan to be able to breed a popular color to sell, so I started trying to figure out why most of mine aren't liver. Now I know! :)

Anyone have an example of a hom DP hom sty chocolate Palomino? I'm still learning to pick out dp lol. I just picked up a stud that'll hopefully point me in the direction of that eventual goal. Can't wait til next month to see how he does. He's only het DP but I don't think It will take long for my lines to start producing hom though. I've gotten a couple black livers already but I sure love that chocolate pali too.

Wow, okay yes. Talk about goals! I gotta make that happen one day in the near future. They're both beautiful. I have one chocolate pali mare that's het DP hom sty, but I'm worried about getting cremello if I breed her with my chocolate pali stud. So would it be better to put him on liver mares, or at least hom sty chestnuts for now? I'll probably put him with a mix of mares and see what comes out. I need to get better at seeing DP in other colors, but I fail miserably..

The thing is if you do get a cremello from that cross, you can just cross it back to a liver stud and get chocolate palominos. If you're lucky, the cremello would've picked up some dp.

Yep with a cremello it will gaurentee whatever cross the foal picks up a cream gene
