Sooty vs Chocolate Palomino?

    What is the difference genetically between sooty palomino and chocolate palomino? I've looked at genetics info for both and I don't get what makes one look/labelled chocolate and the other just sooty. :-/ Is it like liver chestnut/sooty chestnut? I can't figure that one out either.
    Breeding silver black, grullo, and blue roan drafts with appaloosa, tobiano, kit m, and other patterns. I also breed watercolor, nexus, and chinchilla.

    Liver and Chocolates have 1 or 2 copies of dp.
    Hom dp livers can look almost pure black .
    DP like sooty darkens a horse coat :)

    T get a liver or a chocolate, a horse needs at least three darkening genes (and to be red based). There are three darkening genes in the game, two on the same "place". Those two can be seen with tests, and are Sooty and Sooty+. This means that a horse can only ever have two sooty's, one sooty and one sooty+, or two sooty+, or none at all. The one that cannot be seen on tests is DP. DP darkens the red in a coat so works in chestnut and bays, but you cannot see it at all in a black.
