Somatic tattoos are used in two ways.

1) they are used by the game to mark horses created from a Herd Helper with their herd helper type. This may be something as simple as “Bay” for a rank 1 Bay daily herd helper, or something as exotic as the cool stars that come with the Rank Special herd helpers Ammit may share for a special occasion (for instance, we are likely to get a Rank Special for Valentines Day. On your Create a Horse Page you will get the chance to create a single special create with specific color/pattern as described in the Rank Special description). These show up on each relevant horse’s main page, but not on the horse’s image. They are also used by the game to mark GMT (Genetic Modification Treatment) changes made to all horses.

2) upgraded players can create a tattoo they use to “brand” their stock. They may do this in any number of ways, from identifying generations, specific genes, different breeding lines, horses with possibly lethal genes, etc. It costs the player 25hbs per tattoo per horse to put these on their horses. All tattoos, regardless of how they got on the horse, cost 500/tattoo to remove from the horse (you will see the option to use tattoos at the bottom of the Tack page for each horse, possibly only after you have upgraded though).
