  • Leopard appaloosas have to be heterozygous Llp and homozygous ECA3PPATN1, (homozygous for both Llp and PATN1 creates a few spot leopard), and even that doesn't guarantee full leopard. There appear to be other untestable (and un-GMTable) factors as well as PATN1 that effect how far the appaloosa white extends.

Unfortunately, your stallion's dam does not have PATN, so he can not be GMTed for it. If you want spots in his blanket, you could remove the Llp from his sire, but that is as close as he can get to leopard.

  • My two cents: he will have the potential to produce more snowflake-expressing foals if you leave him homozygous LpLp, since then his foals will be guaranteed to carry and thus express Appaloosa no matter what mare you pair him with. If both parent horses are LLp, statistically 25% of their foals will be solid--that's 1 in 4 foals who might have shown snowflake but cannot due to their lack of Lp.

With the information Ondowa mentioned, since he cannot become a leopard anyway, if he was my horse, I would not remove an Lp from his genes.

That said, do whatever you want! He's YOUR horse. He will look stunning either way, but if producing snowflake foals is your goal with him, he is at a snowflake production advantage with his current LpLp status.
