Does Pt really make a difference?
  • Going through my show horses I am noticing that pt has nothing to do with how well a horse does!
I have low 9's horses with more show points tan ones that are high 10s!

I know showing has ro do with luck too. But really? Any thoughts?

  • PT indicates roughly how long a horse will train before it levels off. As long as your horses are all relatively young and no one has leveled off, you are unlikely to see a large difference between them in the overall points earned box.

Horses that train longer have the potential to reach higher show levels. At those higher levels, the rewards for doing well in a show are better than the rewards at lower levels.

If you have a 9.9 PT horse level off in the sweet spot close to the top of its class, it will be a good money earner for you. However, if you have a 12.5 PT horse level off in the top level of its higher class, it will earn way more points and hbs.

There is no way to tell where a horse will level off. There is a huge element of luck to showing. Horses that do fabulously as 4-8 year olds may level off in an awful spot and earn very few points from 11-aging out. Horses that show abysmally as youngsters may level off in the sweet spot and earn you tons of hbs and a huge daily show bonus. This is why most of us don’t cull show ponies...either at all or at least until they have levelled off.
