You can paper stallions at birth. Foundations will paper C, unless they fail. Good 2nd gens will paper B. Some B's are better than others; they range from not as good as their C papered sires through almost as good as some A papers. The best stallions paper *Star, and there is a wide range of ability there. So, from worst to best stallions paper Failed, C, B, A, *Star.

Mares can be papered when they have 3 living foals still in the game. Mare papers run Failed, Yellow, Red, Blue, and *Gold. Papering levels are based on the quality of the foals produced by the mares, but the stallion's ability also figures into that foal quality, so mares' papers are somewhat more fluid than stallions'.
