  • For Hom Snow you will be able to enter them in the snowflake breeders club. For Het snow you would have to bred them to a Hom Snowflake :)

  • Snowflake is a recessive gene that only shows up in Appaloosa horses. It does not show on a gene test. So if you see snowflake appear on a horse you know it has two copies of the snowflake gene and at least one copy of the Appaloosa gene.

If a horse has a parent with snowflake in their coat then you know that the foal has at least one copy of snowflake.

If a horse has a snowflake baby then you know the parent has at least one copy of snowflake.

Genes like snowflake are hard to breed for because they can "hide" on a horse.

  • The spots on them also increase with age, my boy has small flecks like the one above and now he's definitely 'snowed' under.

  • Snowflake can occur spontaneously on rare occasions when you are creating horses, even if a horse isn't snowflake. If it is a mare carrying hidden snowflake, for instance, and you breed her to a homozygous snowflake stallion and she passes it on to her foal while the stallion passes on his LLp, then you will get a surprise snowflake foal. I'm not sure of the odds of this happening, but I know it does.
