Getting draft foals from warmbloods?
-
I love drafts, they are my favorite! But I was just wondering how bone is calculated? I got a few draft foals this season from warmblood parents, I don't think that I've had that happen before.
Example:
Foal 2.54 Draft
Sire 2.36 WB
Dam 2.24 WB
Foal 2.50
Sire 2.36
Dam 2.13ID# 2353 -
Both sets of parents have bone density in the upper reaches for warmbloods. I would say that they are close enough to maximum, that the built-in variability is what has pushed the foals into the draft category. You will notice that the dam of the second foal is the only one of the four parents with a bone density less than 2.2, which would help to explain why the foal's bone density is just into the draft range.De gustibus non disputandum. Horses on this game become drafts when bone density is 2.5, so both of the foals are at the lower end and, like SandycreekFarm said, the parents are at the upper end for warmbloods.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable.

I think it works this way. Each parent always has a range of potential results for every characteristic. When the stallion and mare are bred, a random number from the bone density range for the stallion is added to a random number from the bone density range for the mare. The result is then divided by 2 (There may be an additional random factor involved, but I don't know for sure.). The result is the bone density assigned to the foal.De gustibus non disputandum.
