Breeding Different Types

    I see a lot of horses whose sire and dam are different types (I.e. draft and riding horse). How does this affect the foal? How is it decided which type of horse the foal is (is it based on bone and height, for example?) Thanks!

    It's based on the bone of the two parents. I don't know the the workings of it exactly but the way I see its based on numbers and random chance

    @Canyon I don't see how it could, since there are only 3 types a horse can be and each are desirable. I remember reading somewhere, in the FAQ or something like that that it's possible to slowly breed up from riding horse to draft horse. It was recommended as a goal for some who are looking for something to do.

    I've also seen a challenge to start with ponies and breed up to very tall horses. At least one player is working to have a stable full of horses taller than 17 hands. I have a project working the other way--staring with ponies of any size and seeing how short I can get.

    so I could try for larger boned small ponies ? or do ponies have a bone limit ?

    What you want are cobs! They're the smaller version of the Draft horses. All of the three types of horses are broken in the middle by height, with the taller ones being horses and the shorter ones being ponies.

    Riding pony= short riding horse(light)
    Sport pony=short warmblood (medium)
    Cob=short draft (heavy)

    You can essentially start at one scale and breed all the way to the other end. Hitting all bones and all heights. It'd take a super long time though.
    And no there is no value decrease. I think it's funny seeing warmbloods with a draft parent and a riding pony parent

    It happens in real life, too. Most of the sport warmbloods--Trakheners, Dutch Warmbloods, Hanoverians, etc.--were developed by crossing local draft horses with Thoroughbreds and adding a touch of Arabian from time to time. *G*
