Horse Color?
-
I bought this Horse and I don't understand his coloring. It says he is a Smokey black Splash frame and he is in the satin, frame, cream, and Splash breeders clubs. What is it that makes him multicolored and shiny? Is it the satin? Is it that the previous owner bought the Luster Dust and applied it the Horse. If so, wouldn't that go away once I bought him? He appears to have passed it down to some of his Foals, and the ones he has passed it down to, he is the only parent to have it. I also haven't been able to get Foals from him that have it. Here I see his link. :)

Yes, Satin is what is giving him that distinctive look. He is homozygous recessive Satin, which is a gene like flaxen that has to be homozygous recessive to affect color. Both his sire and his dam are homozygous Satin. Look for the sasa in their color test results. It shows up in his dam as the reddish patch over her ribs.
In order to get foals that have the Satin look, you have to breed him either to a heterozygous recessive Satin mare and hope she passes it on, or to a homozygous recessive Satin mare, in which case you are guaranteed to get a Satin foal.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
